I'm going to soften my comments on the series a bit because I realize that they thought they had more episodes.…
"There just wasn't a lot of emotional impact one way or the other. It's hard to be sad for the death of a character who has decided to die and then repeats that he's fine dying and being a teddy bear many, many times in a monologue after he's dead. O.K., then. I'll have to believe you if you say so, Mr. Tofu."
I *love* this insight ... so funny and so true. And I think it's probably why I wasn't as upset by the finale as I thought I'd be. Tofu really did insist.
Was kinda sad that Nut didn't kiss Tofu back when he came back. Maybe it didn't mean anything but still was kinda…
I noticed that too, but I think Tofu's kiss was a final farewell. To me that makes it less romantic and more understandable that the other person wouldn't kiss back in a typical way. Nut certainly seemed emotional in their final hug. It got to me.
In Episode 16 as Nut sang to Tofu's picture the song lyrics were translated on-screen for the first time. They seemed to foreshadow how the series would end, and this song was the one that played over the opening credits of every episode. They were already warning us. :)
The producers, directors, and writer are now discussing about the ending of the series on twitter space. While…
I'm glad. It sounds like the uproar has reached them and they hope to do some damage control. I doubt they'll give us any kind of alternative ending. I think what they'll be trying to do is justify the ending they gave us.
The team behind the series "Some Day or One Day" actually filmed an epilogue post-production in order to assure fans that the main leads would meet each other again in the alternate timeline established at the series' end.
So, if you hear of the "Teddy Bear" team getting the cast together to film some additional scenes .... now, THAT will be interesting!
I agree with the earlier commenters who thought it would sit better if Nut and Tofu had stayed as friends only. (Now when Nut has sex with Tarn he should put Tofu in another room for the night -- maybe with Na.) However if their relationship had been only a bromance I know there would've been complaints about that, too.
I've decided that as disappointed as I am that they didn't manage to keep Tofu alive along with Tarn, I won't be lowering my rating for the series. It's still a 10/10.
It's fascinating how many clues are dropped for Nut to realize that Tofu the human and Tofu the teddy bear are the same person/entity.
1. No remains found after cremation. 2. Tofu's bracelet found outside the crematorium after cremation. 3. Tofu the teddy bear found within a few yards of Nut's car as Nut is about to leave the temple for the last time. 4. Mrs. Left Slipper -- something human Tofu had tried so hard to retrieve -- is found with the teddy bear. 5. The teddy bear has a cut/repair on his right hand just where Tofu had his injury. 6. The dog is no longer hostile to the teddy bear but instead is just the opposite. 7. (Probably others I can't remember.)
My biggest complaints are that Jan got away with murder, the evil corporation and their malevolent boss also escaped justice, and they chose that awful portrait of Tofu for his funeral service ... Why would they pick one where he looks like he just climbed out of bed?
One final point - if you hate the ending, think back to when you first watched "E.T."
It has a similar theme, and of course in the end E.T. leaves Elliott behind as he returns home after changed Elliott's life. This is a much-beloved movie and I've never heard anyone complain that E.T. didn't stick around to be with Elliott forever. He had his proper place to return to.
Did someone here say that the Buddhist funeral service lasts 3 days? So, Tofu was dead for three days then arose. It's a death and resurrection trope right out of the New Testament.
But these two comparisons work best if Nut and Tofu's relationship had remained platonic. Their sexual intimacy throws things off a bit, but it makes sense when you realize that Tofu was in many ways an expression of Tarn's love for Nut, and his love included sexual attraction. So what can you do?
Watching an extended unsubbed scene on YouTube of Tofu as he escapes the funeral pyre and finds his way back to Nut, I'm starting to think that the people behind the series actually thought they had come up with a happy ending. The tone of the whole thing seems whimsical.
Now I'm curious to watch with subs. If they really thought that, I should let them go for it and see if it succeeds.
I have thought that if Jan poisons Tofu early in the episode then they're probably setting the stage for his resurrection at the end.
The writers won't let Jan and that evil boss lady get away with their crimes. I would love for Jan to assume that Tofu is dead and gone, only to be confronted by him a few days later.

(I've always believed that AO3 is a superior platform to Wattpad and here once again you prove it's true. 😉 )
