He wasn’t illegitimate. In episode 6 he accused his father of betraying his mother with a “musical performer” because they were caught in bed together. His father says he never betrayed his mother, implying he was framed and it was a misunderstanding. But Qianfan pretty much implied that the betrayal caused his mother to leave his father and for Qianfan to resent him and want nothing to do with him, thus he took the last name of his mother/uncle. His father claims that Qianfan Uncle & Grandfather looked down on him because he was lowborn/low status. It remains to be seen whether the father really betrayed them or he was setup by the uncle.

I so so happy you gave it another try!!! and even funnier…. in the same comment thread someone else talked about The Rise of Phoenix ML and I had previously dropped The Rise of Phoenix, but decided to watch it and stay with it this week and I ended up loving it and the ML is amazing.

The first Xu Kai drama I watched was actually The Legends which got me hooked on Xu Kai. I’ve actually watched 3 times I’m ashamed to admit lol They had fantastic chemistry. Had The Legends had better editing and it would have been phenomenal. A real missed opportunity. But even still it is one of my favorites. I watched Arsenal Military Academy right after and I actually thought that was Xu Kai’s best acting performance but I did not enjoy the drama outside of his character at all and felt zero of the chemistry that ooozed out between him & Bai Lu in The Legends.
I know many many people did not like ZDY in ALP and either didn’t watch or dropped it. It took me a second to accept her but once I did I actually fell in love with her character. I don’t know if you made it to the second arc when Bai Jue becomes Qing Mu but he was adorable, selfless and a good kisser!!! lol
Anyway, thank you for helping me decide to commit to watching TROP ❤️😍🥰

I can’t restrain myself it’s a terrible flaw of mine! Btw!!!!!! Because of you I finally committed to watching The Rise of Phoenix’s to completion (finished last night and was completely emotionally destroyed) and you are absolutely right!! it is a masterpiece, Ning Yi is INCREDIBLE and is now probably #2 on my best boyfriends list (Qing Mu/Bai Jue will always reign supreme for me) I loved it so much I am actually thinking of rewatching this weekend since now I will understand so much more of the first half and catch things I missed. The last 10 episodes are a mess, as everyone said, and they really ruined NiNi’s character which is such a shame. But Ning Yi’s character throughout was just a masterpiece in both character & performance. It is possibly the most powerful performance of a ML in a Cdrama I’ve ever watched 😍
My advice to everyone is don’t watch the previews……. it looks like we are in for lots of rain ⛈ and jealousy, envy, trickery, betrayal and pain pain pain. I have faith in our lead couple to come out of it all like shining rainbows 🌈🌈
this show does not let me down ever!!!!! today was so so good! The editing of the birthday Pipa performance with the flashbacks was incredible. If I was worrried this show would lose its luster I can put those worries to rest. I am fully confident this show will maintain it’s stellar quality until the end.
