The synopsis is lacking in detail so I'm posting a more detailed one. (Thanks to Titania)
"Feng Lai Qi" is a legendary historical drama in ancient costume, adapted from the novel "The True Color of the Empress". Jing Hengbo, a kind-hearted, intelligent, and strategically talented dancer, was originally a dancer in Chang'an City who pursued freedom. She accidentally got involved in the conspiracy of the battle for the throne of the Black Water Kingdom and was forced to become the puppet queen of the Black Water Kingdom. Jing Hengbo not only had to fight wit and courage with the traitors in power, but also unexpectedly had emotional entanglements with Gong Yin, the teacher of the right country, and Yeluqi, the teacher of the Zuo country. Jing Hengbo advocates putting the people first and is determined to reform, but she won the hearts of the people, but she was framed by the officials to force her into the palace, which led to her falling into the countryside and being chased and killed in the name of calamity. With the escort and escort of Jing Hengbo, Jing Hengbo was able to gather heroes from all corners of the world, reopen commerce, develop the economy, and use the power to jointly overthrow the traitor behind the scenes who had controlled the government and the opposition for many years. After going through ups and downs and suffering, Jing Hengbo became stigmatized, and he and Gong Yin gained a tortuous and touching love. In the end, Jing Hengbo, who cherished the people in his heart, finally regained the throne, purged the officials, established a peaceful and prosperous age, and wrote a brand new legend of Heishui.

Hard to answer your question and there will be different views about it. I think there is enough romance to satisfy most people as you can judge by the ratings. However, watch it and find out for yourself.
At ep 21...and please spare me.Hahahaha....I haven't laughed this much in a long time, I know that this ep was…
Haha! Donhua as a human shadow of himself falls sooo deeply for Jiu that it literally breaks his heart when she kills herself rather than stay with him. He has undergone great suffering! It's a fantasy so you have to take it with a pinch of salt! But what does cucked mean?
I was expecting this drama to be exciting but Iβm finding it very depressing. The acting is quite good and it…
If you enjoy reading the novels that dramas are based on then you would find that this novel is quite dark and 'sadistic' but also very intriguing. The drama has had a few changes made to it to pass Chinese censorship which has also given emphasis to different aspects of the story. I'm not saying read the novel but you would see that the story is fascinating. (Link is in discussions and it's very short)
ML: fact that none of his clan is looking for him and no time is given to his family. I wish there was more about…
The novel provides more background and it helps one to understand some elements of the drama better. Not saying you should read it lol but it's very short! The hairstyle is like that because JYH turns into that Zhuyu grass that the bird woman grabs off the tree. JYH does this to trap the Ubume bird; unfortunately it takes a month to grow out in the story but is only in the 1st episode! Do you like it or dislike it? JYH's plots are survival tactics and this is how she has survived in Flower Valley. She's been plotting to escape so she has to be secretive and calculating. Valley Master has used her like a tool to hone the skills of Hao Qing by driving a wedge between them. Affection is discouraged between them and she hides her feelings except with Luo Luo; it seems to have become her second nature so that she doesn't even realise she has fallen for the merman. In the novel, JYH was taken from her parents as a child because she possessed double veins and they were killed! The novel is pretty dark with themes of torture and patricide and would not have passed Chinese censorship.
I just can wait to see these PE to airing to see how versatile Reba is...and I hope her wish also come true she…
She could be looking at such a role even now, we don't know. But it's a shame Reba has to be so mysterious about her new projects or else there might be fan wars.
Just watched that scene when Sun's mother dies and it is a real tear jerker. The acting is superb by all the characters. A really highly charged and emotive scene. The fight scene is mesmerising.
Can anyone tell me what episodes are the alternative timeline is and can I skip them if my attention span is too…
I'm not sure if this is what you mean but I gave this reply to a poster who asked the same question. The mortal arc starts at ep 8 and you can fast forward til ep 21 when it ends. Key points are that Fen Jiu and the king do not have a happy ending and a mortal, Qing Ti dies saving her. If you fast forward more episodes you may miss plot development. After the Heavenly arc BFJ falls into Fan Yin valley with the demon lord Yan Chi Wu end of ep 27. The dream of Aranya arc starts at ep 34 and ends at ep 49.
I think you have hit the nail on the head. And it seems you have read the novel too.
The points you mention in your top comment are reasonable and making those changes would have sufficed. The novel is much darker and has scenes of torture and patricide therefore changes were made to pass Chinese censorship. With novel adaptations, getting the balance right is tricky. Maybe less use of sacrifice and less episodes overall? ( Novel link in discussions if you are interested!)
How many episodes have you watched btw? This great FMV by MK916 might get you in the mood maybe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zQ8ZduB80U&t=1sIf…
I think it helps with providing insight into the actions of the characters though it's not needed if the script is well written. Due to some of the content of the novel it would not pass Chinese censorship and hence the watering down and changing of some of the story. But in the main points the drama sticks close to the novel and was highly approved of by the author. I've read it twice and love it but I also love the adaptation too.
