I get what he`s saying in terms of him exercising his acting muscles because, usually, character studies feel most…
I first saw him in the K2 and it's one of my top dramas, and I agree that I enjoy seeing him best in intense roles. My favorite of his are The K2, Healer, Sound of Magic, and then If you Wish Upon Me. (Looking forward to the Worst of Evil, waiting for a window of time where I want to get Hulu.)
I'm only on episode 6 but I'm already way more emotional and/or angry than I would have thought with these family dynamics!! I watched a video on family structures around the world (I think it was whatifalthist) and it taught me about traditional Chinese family structure which surrounded the Father's absolute power over the whole family (sons and their wives and kids too). (There were several other asian countries with similar but different structures, so I could be wrong on a few things).
What this show really emphasizes is how the individual is subordinate to the family and the Father above all, and the negatives that can come with it. Man'er's family lives like slaves on their own farm all because the grandfather thinks the oldest son being a scholar is the most important thing and everyone should sacrifice for him, and the grandma is a total shrew. (I suppose the positives in this system can be if the Father is good he can protect some people from being abused if he wants.) Another aspect of this structure is that women always marry into the family from outsiders and they have no power at all in the family, unless perhaps they are the grandma.
Anyone watching the show can spot who is being abused and taken advantage of, and who is the one doing that abuse. So though I don't enjoy watching this part of the show, even skip through some of it, I can mostly appreciate that the show is intending to be a mirror to human nature and how people react when in different positions in a family.
I really hope that Man'er's father will man up though, it would be really refreshing if the worm turned. However, if he never does that itself can be a lesson for all of us on what NOT to do.
How is it that Zeng Shunxi manages to be in drams that always use his real voice! Of the 7 dramas I've watched in recent months he always used his voice, which always indicates (to me) they are higher quality. The only one I'm not sure about is Fighter of the Destiny since I watched that a few years ago.
By the way, Zeng Shunxi is the master of wuxia dramas, and I love it.
Wow! This really blew me away. I was totally immersed in the story and the characters. The dramatic tension is really great, and I enjoyed the many charismatic characters. Zhang Chulan is ADORable, but I love it when he gets fierce. I really hope there may be a second season???
I am just starting off this series as a new fan of Joseph Zeng (so no spoilers!!) and I'm already blown away by the entertainment value and quality of the show. Unlike several other modern dramas I've watched, the audio quality sounds top-notch, the cinemetography or "setting the scene" are quite well done, and the story moves at a fast pace. I usually don't watch modern c-dramas unless there's a specific actor (like JZ) but now I'm really enjoying the show for what it is. Maybe I should check out the other drama by this director, the day of becoming you, if it is the same quality.
Thank you for this information, it's been so long and it's good to be realistic. I really wish there were a second…
I loved seeing Joseph Zeng's character at the end, so that would be amazing! It was such a change for him because nearly all of his characters are really good-hearted, self-controlled, and sometimes naive. But he pulled off this character so well that I wasn't even thinking about Joseph Zeng the actor, I was only thinking about our character and what had happened to him. And wanting to see more of him!
At least, even without a season 2, I feel like I can imagine what may play out in his life. Also I've seen "Bad and Crazy" so the concept is explored more there (if you haven't seen it, check it out).
Thanks for your replies and this information. It just shows that stories live on years after they premier, since I just watched this show in the last week and became a fan of JZ in the last month. He is one stellar actor and I'm having fun watching everything he's done.
I really liked this show, loved Lu Han's character, enjoyed the whole thing. So it's funny when I look and see such a LOW rating. This is probably the lowest-rated show I've watched, but it really appealed to me. The important thing was that I liked Lu Han's character from the beginning and his character arc, and I found the supporting cast interesting. Now I've become a huge fan of Joseph Zeng and realized he was in this too! So I think it comes down to individuals and whether the story appeals to them.
He is so cute and funny in Young Actors Retreat🤣😂He is exactly 180° different from his characters😅😅
That is why I recognize him! I'm watching Tale of the Nine Tailed and he looks so familiar, but I didn't realize until now that I've seen him on Young Actor's retreat. I watched that three times it was so great.
Thanks. In my research it does look like it's not available through apple, so basically I can't sign up for youku. But at least Viki has many of the shows, and then the youku or yoyo english channel have some of their others shows like I am Nobody.
Question about how to watch this: I'm watching on viki, but wondered how I can watch as a VIP on Youku in the USA. Can you download the app on an iphone and stream it to your imac desktop? Or is the app even available for iphone or in the USA. I was hoping to get ahead to the current episodes on youku.
Celebrating with everyone. It's so exciting! Looks like Viki picked it up since it's listed as coming soon on their website. Have a great week everyone!
