He follows the route for those relying on their talent and compentency. He might not be as popular as the traffic actors but he can maintain long career if he can keep and improve his skills.

The rumor that Linfeng spread related to the story in the prequel novel - Shang Gu which was adapted to Ancient Love Poetry. Yuan Qi was conceived and born by Hou Chi (the immortal born from true goddess Shang Gu's spiritual consciousness or soul or Yihe's used in TLI) and Qing Mu (who was split from true god Bai Jue or Di Juan as mentioned in TLI)

In term of original story, the last immortal was adapted from the novel Hidden God which is sequel of novel Shang Gu which had been adapted for Ancient Love Poetry. Thus some characters, relationship and history was describled in the prequel (ALP or the novel Shang Gu).
The production team wanted to make The Last immortal as a standalone drama, thus they simplify or just brush off some details
