I had explained the father-son relationship in comment section of TLI. In the novel, Bai Jue abandoned his son. However, in the drama, he did not abandone Yuan Qi. He secretly took care and taught YQ (not only academic knowledge but also Shang Gu's hobby, which were not his things). The reason that kept him away from YQ is to protect both YQ and Shang Gu. Wu Huan was more powerful than him (premuaturely awaken thus only got about 30-40% of original power, then injured). And his ultimate goal is using his synthetic chaos power to undo the Chaos Tribulation which had been existing for more than 60 000 years. He had sealed his power origin with the Tribulation to contain it, but there was limit of containtion. Wu Huan was a kind of obstacle on his way to defeat the tribulation. He ought to gain back his power to remove first Wu Huan and then sacrifice before the Chaos Tribulation erupted.

@Sharanya had told that BJ's original plan did not include any scenerio of being with Hou Chi/Shang Gu. He just wanted to save her, keep her alive and give her a life of being an ordinary (no more burden of responsibility).
Escape of Qing Mu and Qing Mu- Hou Chi's relationship and then the birth of Yuan Qi were all of unexpected factors to his plan. And Wu Huan's devilization and her ambition also caused big impact on his futher choice of action. At the end, he chose to stick to his orginal goal: wishing Shang Gu and his son to live a long happy life after his death. Thus, he repaired his relationship with Yuan Qi, explained to him that everyone would die once as natural laws as flowers bloomed then withered; dying was not scary and it would be happy to die for the sake of loved ones and everyone. He left YQ the memory and hoped that YQ would read it when he grew up and then understood more about him and his choice. BJ thought that they might be sorrow for a few years but then they could move on (he told the story of Feng Ran to Yuan Qi). I'd like to emphasize here that the Chaos Tribulation still existed and endangered the whole 3 realms. Either Shang Gu or Bai Jue (who had Chaos power) had to sacrifice her/his life. That is the responsibility of the true god to protect the world. If BJ told Shang Gu about the tribulation, She would take the sacrifice again as in the first time.

About Shang Gu, indeed, she was not a good mother. She let her sorrow and regret occupy her mind. From our moral view, it was unreasonable that she abandoned her son (with her ceased husband) to just be grieved. However, they were not mortal, human beings and we should take some factor into consideration:
1- Yuan Qi looked very much similar to Bai Jue (when Shang Gu woke up, she asked YQ whose was his parents, why he looked like BJ; in the novel, it was said that YQ looked very similar to BJ). Thus, Shang Gu could not face to YQ.
2. Those true god was born from kind of thin air, they were not used to parenthood. in ALP, Shang Gu was brought up mainly by Tian Qi. Thus, she thought it would be better for YQ that Tian Qi and Zhi Yang took care of him compared with being with devastrated, grieved mother who even could not take care of herself.

Additional point from the novel (not in ALP): Shang Gu locked herself in the mountain which located Bai Jue's bamboo house. She spent 50% of her power to seal the surrounding area so that no-one could enter it. 3 years later, she removed the seal. Zhi Yang came to visit her and ask the reason. She said that after knowing the truth, she did so to prevent her from destroying the whole world. Because of saving the world, Bai Jue had lost his life.

You can see that those true gods (including Yuan Qi later) all awared of their job and responsibility to the world. They were born to take such burden responsibility to protect others' lives. They could not have a normal life, always place reponsibility above their own private desire. That was their fate. Shang Gu's fate was to die for the world. Bai Jue did not accept that fate. He fought agaist the Heaven Fate to save her. Shang Gu's kneeling was not only just begging the acestor god but also betting on fighting agaist the fate to bring back BJ.

Last, it seems that all xianxia dramas/stories MUST contain angst.

Yuan Qi was sent to Dong Hua's Sect during the time Shang Gu kneeled to ask for Bai Jue's return (in both ALP and the novel). Thus Yuan Qi did not know his father was back. In the novel, YQ became true god the same day when Bai Jue return/reborn. Witnessed the destruction of Daze Sect and his unbearable emotion caused by his sect brothers' death, he understood his father's decision and action in the past.
Bai Jue later came to the heavenly palace to meet YQ and asked him to return to god realm for family reunion. YQ declined and continued his plan to resurrect Daze Sect secretly which would help A Yin wash out her guilty feeling using (al)most of his power.
About the father-son relationship:
1. In the novel Shangu (prequel of Hidden God): Qing Mu knew and took care of the egg which contained Yuan Qi when he was conceived. The egg was formed right after he suffered 81 thunder strikes. Qing Mu and Hou Chi did not get married and they didn't have a night together as in ALP. Bai Jue (as true god) did not acknowledge Yuan Qi. YQ was Qing Mu's son (not his). He did not repair the relationship althought YQ begged him to return Qing Mu to him for a few day (then only 1 day). BJ loved and was proud of his son but he never expressed it. He thought it would be better for YQ if he did not experience the emotion of having dad for short time and then losing dad forever.
Ah, by the way, in Bai Jue's view, Hou Chi loved Qing Mu but he did not know that Shang Gu also loved him. Her memory of the last 300 years before the Tribulation was withdrawn and sealed by Bai Jue. They had never confessed to each other in the God realm. It was Tian Qi gave her that memory which enabled her to recall his confession of loving her (when declining confession by other godess) and her love development after that. Shang Gu considered Hou Chi as independent person and so Hou Chi's love to Qing Mu was not hers.
