I want to talk about the fact that it's the male character who are tied to more domestic and marital goals whilst the female characters (while still being invested in romance) tend to be more focussed on other things.
You've got Ik Jun, who has a son he adores and keeps house in contrast to his ex-wife who's always away on business and who eventual leaves them. You've got Jun Wan, who's main arc is his relationship with Ik Sun and the fact he wants a long term commitment in contrast to Ik Sun who's main arc centres around her application to the degree in the UK. And then you've got Jung Won, who everyone says should settle down and have a family because he's so good with kids and clearly loves them, in contrast to Gyeo Eul who I don't think anyone would say either of thise things of. Finally, Song Hwa who doesn't want to date and just wants to go camping (apparently) and Chi Young, who wants to date her quite a bit.
Like it's subtle and I think you could find way more examples (or counter examples) if you wanted, but I just think the slight role reversal is pretty neat.
Defining this show as queer-baiting seems apt but I know die-hard fans oppose to this labeling. But to give you…
I'm not sure I'd even equate their relationship to that of an asexual couple tbh. For me, because I'm not interested in sex, a lot of other forms of non-sexual physical intimacy (hugs, stroking hair, cuddles, etc) are really weighted with significance when it comes to romantic relationships because they play such an important part in how I can express my romantic affection. Tine and Sarawat don't have that, their touches are so fleeting and so lacking in any form of intimacy they really do just read as bros to me. Like seriously, if they were an asexual couple, I'd think they were a very unhappy one XD
But as you said, Tine is definitely not supposed to be asexual and neither is Sawarat so their lack of intimacy gets even weirder.
I mean, I talk about the ships here because it's the easiest thing to talk about. If I talked about any other…
Plus, to be fair, the ships are technically the main source of 'conflict' in the drama. The way they are written makes them the biggest 'what if' of the drama so I think it's pretty natural to gravitate towards them as discussion points. Everything else is purposefully written in a way that's so beautifully and realistically mundane and low key that it kind of just sweeps you along. The relationships feel like you're watching them, everything else feels like you're living it, if that makes sense?
Why do people only care about their ships in this show
I mean, I talk about the ships here because it's the easiest thing to talk about. If I talked about any other aspect of the drama I feel like I'd end up writing an essay gushing about JW's internal conflict or something and I think it's probably best to spare the world from that XD
Yes. Honestly I literally decided to see for other reasons and WDH wasn't even one of them but he ended up being…
When I came back here I was quite pleased to see WDH getting a lot of praise. He's been an actor who's impressed me for a long time now so I'm pleased he's still managing to show his skills here :)
I came back to see how things were going and to see if I should try to pick it up again (I'm having problems with properly dropping dramas atm because my brain has decided that now is the time to bring back its completionist tendencies, yay). From what I can gather it is still very much the same apart from:
1) even more product placement 2) WDH has finally been allowed to act
i realize how the band song for ep 10 is related to the episode story. How ikun and min ha's confessions aren't…
Also, a lot of the imagery surrounding the song (mv and cover) links to JW and GE's relationship with each other so not only does it relate to the confessions we saw, it also relates to a shift in another couplesl's dynamics. So much packed into one song and it's beautiful XD
There’s one question I still have. When Man and Type went on the retreat and Type was crying, did we ever find…
He was crying at a photo of Sarawat and Tine high-fiving. Boy was looking into the future and didn't like what he saw....
In all seriousness though, I have no clue what he was crying about and I don't think the drama ever brought it up again (I assume it comes up in the second book of the series, which I have not read)
This drama had a lot of potential but dropped the ball somewhere along the way. Its plotting and pacing weren't perfect at the beginning but they worked well enough to keep me looking forward to the next episode, add to that Sarawat and Tine's dynamics and you had the first BL I was able to watch without skipping a single scene.
Fast forward a few more episodes and that had all but gone. I think this may be the first time I've seen a couple lose all their chemistry when they get together XD One of the things I initially liked about the drama is its decision to slowly develop T and S's without resorting to your typical plot points and tropes (there was no actual 'drama' for about 6(?) episodes and it was beautiful). Once they got together though, it felt like it suddenly switched lanes and, rather than take the opportunity to continue exploring T and S's new relationship, the drama suddenly started to introduce the conflicts and arguments it had avoided before. It got stale and it got stale fast.
It's a shame I fell out of love with the drama but I am grateful to this drama for 2 things:
- Introducing me to the lead actors, especially Win. For his first ever role he put on an amazing performance and I'd like to see what he does next. - A truly outstanding soundtrack. I love how music was so important to the drama and I love how that was reflected in how it was used on screen and in the background of certain scenes. It's not often you see a drama put so much effort into its OST and music choice so to see it done here was really nice.
This drama just makes me so happy. I come away from each episode with a smile on my face and a giddy feeling in my chest. It's nice (and I'd also argue quite rare) to have a drama that can be quite so warm and comforting and genuine. WJ and WH know their style and they're executing it perfectly here.
I can't help but feel that this drama sometimes forgets it's supposed to be a comedy, or at least that's the impression I get with the number of actual action scenes in the 2 most recent episodes :P Still, I'm finding this an enjoyable, light-hearted watch and YE and WW's scenes are quickly becoming something I look forward to each week (can we please have more of them? I don't really care about the "main" couple and their dynamic is both hilarious and adorable and one of the best things about the show XD)
I mean, I all can say to those people is: please don't work with kids.
I know what you mean. I watched that scene and thought, SW is going to get it right this time, JY is going to get the care and nurturing he needs.
Kids need to know that they have at least one adult in their life who they can count on, no matter what. I don't think JY realised he had that until that scene.
Ahhh ep 14 was so satisfying to watch, sun woo dropping the bomb on da kyung, the psychiatrist finally stopped…
Nope, believe it or not, I didn't want to see a traumatised child get hit by one of the most important adults in his life. As someone who works with children and who therefore gets to see them at their best and at their worst, I'm going to tell you now that his behaviour is pretty darn normal for a kid who has gone through what he went through.
Would this be a correct assessment?
