Ahhh. I really was looking forward to watching this show. Primarily, because Park Shin Hye is actually a hit or miss for me. While I do think she has potential, I feel like she, more often than not, leaves it untapped. I heard people raving about how unconventional and brilliantly executed her role was so I was thinking of giving it a go but this review has given me a lot of things to think about.
I agree about the Teacher/Student relationships. They don't work for me most of the times either. Age gap is also something I'm not too fond of (mostly because the relationship is not properly executed whenever writers use this trope) which must be one of the reasons why Goblin didn't appeal to me as much as it did others.
What an interesting point of view! As someone who rated this show a 10, I surprisingly agree with almost everything you said.
Kill Me Heal Me really did take a lot of liberties with describing the illness aspect, so much so, that at times not only does it seem unrealistic but also borders on being comical.
While the fact that it was one of my first dramas might have played a role in me rating it so high. Truthfully the reason why it's raved about is not because people don't notice the lack of logical inaccuracies but rather, it is because of the emotional depth that comes with the show. The actors have done an amazing job and as the show progresses, all the things that seem so convulated and messed up in the beginning, straighten out and start to make sense. Every character is given closure and the beautiful soundtrack helps intensify feelings.
But I have to agree with you. This show banks on the watcher's heart rather than the mind. I see that you dropped it on episode 5 and I can relate to when an over-hyped show ends up being a cup of tea you'd rather not try.
Such an interesting article! Personally, I don't like dropping dramas but funnily enough I have dropped dramas due to all the reasons above.
That Winter The Wind Blows because it frankly, just wasn't for me. Not too much of a fan of hinted incest and dead romance ya know.
Cheese in Trap because its appeal just lost itself to me as the drama progressed.
Boys over flowers because the plot was an utter mess.
Heartstrings well because it was pretty shitty honestly. Lol and because I didn't see the plot move forward.
The Princess Man because honestly it was too friggin boring for me. I heard it gets good but by the time any entertaining scene would come, I'd figured I would be dead by boredom numerous times so I dropped it like a hot pocket.
Quoting you:"First of all, nobody can deny the fact that Wallace Huo is the epitome of beauty. He's gorgeous;…
Hahaha. Thankyou, Thankyou and Thankyou.
Honestly, I haven't found the kind of show you're looking for yet. I've been planning to see Battle of Changsha for ages but I have the same reservations that you seem to harbor.
Worry not though sistra, as soon as I find something worth your while, I'll send it your way. ^~^
Aww thank you for the compliment. I try really hard to write good reviews but I watch things so long after they've…
Mention not, you deserved it. I also read your review on Cheese in Trap and you mirrored my thoughts almost exactly. Unlike you though, I'm not strong enough so I just lost patience and dropped it. Lol
That's really good to know. A strong and independent heroine wins a lot of points in my book.
Haha. I do the same- watching dramas way after everybody else has watched them, that is- so I understand. But I go through almost every eloquent review written about a drama that I'm even a little bit interested in so... Hehe, you hit the jackpot with me. ;)
Such a well-written review. Honestly, I'm always scared to try a Lee Min Ho drama because I haven't had the best experience with him. Though, your review does make me wonder. I really like slow-burn and mature relationships so I think I might just check this out.
I can only hope that the female lead is a strong character in her own right.
Excellent review! I do agree that Kim Heechul is the saving grace of the show. I have never binge watched it tho. I basically nit-pick episodes of artists I like and watch them but I'd still say that honestly this show isn't that funny. Some episodes are downright boring. I think the running man and infinity challenge team does a far better job at being entertaining. But, then again, you could say that all these shows have their own theme.
Um, but the drama comes with the tragedy tag in its bio so...? How is that a spoiler? ;_;I don't think you should…
Ah. That explains it. This article did get checked by two MDL proofreaders to scan for spoilers and such before it got published and if they OK-ed it, it means the general consensus says that little tit bit does not classify as a spoiler in any way.
However, since I have been in your shoes before, I can definitely understand how little things like this can irk.
Thankyou for the compliment and I hope this incident does not curb your enthusiasm for watching Empress Ki! :D
Fine article, although i could do without the spoilerish part about Empress Ki, i'm nearing the ending and now…
Um, but the drama comes with the tragedy tag in its bio so...? How is that a spoiler? ;_;
I don't think you should feel any less excited to watch it, since it's an excellent show. When I first got to know that the end wasn't 'happy', I also started dreading it and almost didn't want to finish it but as the episodes passed I felt like I was worried in vain. The tragedy is something that's inevitable but who knows you might actually find the end satisfying (like me).

Good review though!

Relatable piece of writing. Keep it up!
