Exactly!!! I really don't understand where motives directed. He wants to save his nephew but he was also the one who almost killed him not once but countless times. That stupid Li Xiang, I suppose he wanted to get a good name and position, told the previous emperor about what Wei Yan said which made him vary of Wei Yan along with others as they were all together when he said that.
Then, there was a royal banquet, where Wei Yan was drugged by that emperor and made him make out with that consort I suppose. But his plan failed as he made out with a maid instead and he couldn't blame him for adultery as it was Wei Yan's own maid.
Then that dog emperor confirmed that Wei Yan really slept with his consort when that royal doctor said she was pregnant. But she actually wasn't.
This led to the successive deaths and change of court. And, when Wei Yan was caught up with all the schemes he plotted rebellion and I suppose he killed that emperor and made Qi Sheng ascend the throne.

Because he returned that they didn't get food and supplies and started losing their battles until Wei Qiming didn't provide their supplies till the end and his reputation got tarnished right?
Xie Zheng got the letters from his mom's sweet box made by Wei Yan right... In those letters we can see, it was written by the consort he was in affair with to Wei Yan. And that's how finally they proved he was wrong. Actually it seemed that crown princess put fire in that consort's palace and died together with her.
So what Qi Shu's mother was saying was, Wei Yan was never actually having affair with that consort. She liked him and the previous emperor got to know that and he also knew why she avoids him as she doesn't hold him in her heart instead she got Wei Yan. Once, she got sick and it seems she was checked by a royal doctor. And that royal doctor said she was pregnant. That emperor, since he never slept with her, confirmed that her baby was Wei Yan's. So, he forged a letter in her handwriting and sent it to Wei Yan who was in frontlines to come rescue her thus planning to eliminate Wei Yan by accusing him having affair with his consort, Consort by burning her palace, Crown prince by letting him die with General Xie in the frontlines and crown princess by framing her with her son. So the overall culprit was the emperor.
Also, she says, when the guards came to put out the fire, it seems they were pouring water mixed with an oil which makes fire burn larger. And when all the things ended, the royal doctor who said the consort was pregnant suicided and before dying he seemed to have confessed that the consort was never pregnant in the first place. Now it is a mystery who actually wanted to sabotage her.
Also, I had a doubt on Wei Yan since his introduction. They were portraying him as the villain from the beginning to the end that I knew there'd be twist. I guessed that he brought all the incidents he made and even others made upon himself when he let Xie Zheng and Changyu pray to his parents after receiving those lashes. Also when he shouted at Qi Sheng saying that all their Qi blood uses that disgusting tricks... I guessed maybe he was forced into all of this and I was right... I would never say he was right tho... Could've done much better but he got caught in the plot...
Then I kept on thinking... If that Consort he loved was Changyu and he himself was Xie Zheng... Will Xie Zheng do the same too? I mean, he got conspired, his beloved was tortured and killed, the emperor is silently a tyrant, nobody is there to uphold the empire... Maybe he'd choose to be like Wei Yan too... But I don't think he'd cruelly sabotage a good general by slandering and accusing him that his entire family would live in shame and kill them in silence.
Xie Zheng would have gotten different plans instead of blaming anyone. He might take all the blames himself and make himself a threatening figure in the entire court. Like Wei Yan but not like him either until a good ruler comes...
So beautiful!!! This is the first drama which made me cry for villains deaths 😭 first it was Sun Yuanqing, then Qi Min, even Wei Yan... 😭😭😭 But seriously... Ep 39 had so many deaths (atleast I thought as they were all full of blood) like Qi Min, Qi Sheng, Li Xiang... I was thinking omg they all really died? And boom 💥!! The next episode all are alive! I was so badly crying when Qi Min broke his hand and fell to his death goshh... And director planned to really revive him and make him die again.
40th ep really made me cry seeing all those faces of Lin 'an... That was such a nice touch 😭😭
