This episode Choi Hyun Seok joins culinary war chef side. Matfia Napoli and Sam Kim join chef table. Lee Hee Jun and Song Joong Ki are the guests. First battle is for Hee Jun to get to try fine dining. The two chefs this round are Choi Hyun Seok and Kim Poong. Poong is hilarious because he is using two copycat recipes for his dish and Hyun Seok is making a tongue fish dish. Hee Jun literally tears up with a dish and enjoys soft tofu cakes in other. For second battle, the Master of Chinese cooking vs Goddess of Chinese cooking. They were to make dishes people would wait in line for. It is very impressive how much these chefs accomplish in 15 minutes. The master makes stir fry dishes and the goddess makes dongpo pork dumpling. It is also fun watching the chefs sample and comment on the dishes. These episodes are very entertaining as well as informative about various cooking techniques.

Sunny and Rain get together. He was quite sneaky in how he became soulmate for her. What had me laughing was his techie brain telling her how they could improve app to prevent cheating like ‘they’ had done.🤣 He explains via txt what happened with colleague and resolved that decently, with both women. He definitely writes better than speaks.. 🤣The mom is cutting the strings and giving them apartment ads. 😁 Their truth or dare game reacquainted them with what they appreciated most. His willingness to just be there for her where she was at won her over. This episode made up for many bad ones. It put a smile on my face and warmed my grouchy heart that was annoyed at the distractions put in the forefront. Here I am finally pleased with everybody even tho there is no real logic for everything to end well. I don’t care. They enjoy the rain and the sun together and we finally know they should be together because they really are better people together. It just took a very long time for me to see it that way. Here everything was as it should be, the actors, the writers, the film crew, et al. They are free with each other and finally come into their own as a real couple with no distractions

I Ling is waiting for You You at movies but he is held up. She kills time in karaoke machine and is found by cute pharmacy guy. They have the chat she should be having with You You. 😝 She gets another txt that You You can’t make it. While there, she see’s her ‘prince’ is Prince to all damsels in distress. While her prince is off his pedestal, her hubby is being gallant Prince for co worker. I hate this bit of drunken meetings for CEO to take advantage of female colleagues. It was a vehicle to get them in same cab, but it wasn’t a good look for either of them. She should have made excuse to leave early for son and avoided all this mess. The one thing I liked about this episode was I Ling cutting loose at karaoke after hubby said not gonna make it. I think this is the first time she has been her real self in a very long time. You You finally tells the truth so that his family will quit trying to ‘cure’ I Ling. He let her go through a lot before his spine strengthened enough to be of use for her. This gave his mom some time for reflection and we get her back story as a new mom. You You was sickly so she developed a rigid routine to keep him healthy and safe. But it did have consequences in how dependent he became staying in her home. The other thing that deserves mention is when ma-in-law actually listened to I Ling’s past travels and realized, even if only for that minute😝, how important it was for I Ling to have her own home. That it was something circumstances had always kept from her. I can only hope she feels a bit guilty at her depriving I Ling the freedom of her own home since married to her son. That was hopefully a moment of true clarity for her. You You gets in cab with co worker and passes out. She wakes him at her place and wants him to txt her when he gets home. As the cab starts to leave he circles back to her place.

Colleague has to challenge I Ling with what ifs. This again is a sidebar that won’t do anything with the growth of anybody. She reminds him that there were no good points to start from that would have any better results. That his odds would be 50/50. They complete project and head for home. Xue You is there to greet her. His evening had been playing dad with his colleague’s son and dropping them off. Again to the writer….to what end? They come home to a circus of family and predictor of best spot for fertility. It is so out of hand that this mom took zero time to actually talk to them, encourage them, and ask what they wanted to do. This ‘I know what’s best for you’ crap is wearing thin. Especially since the ones she is ‘helping’ have least say in the matter. I Ling should have grabbed his hand and run out the door to leave them all to their own devices. Will he man up and tell mom the truth? He was ready to til mom brought the zoo home.😝

Xue You’s mom finds the surgery discharge bill and assumes it’s for an abortion. When he struggles with explanation, I Ling lies to take the blame thinking she is helping him out. He turns around and gets mad at her. I think he is mad because he thinks she is giving herself excuse to not try to have children with him. I would like to think it’s more about telling his mom the truth, but he’s still the baby living at home indulged by her. If he were truthful he would be wanting his wife happy in her own home and he has yet to reach that point. She was finally stepping up to take the heat from him as a concerned wife and got crap in return. It is no wonder these two don’t progress. It is always one step forward two back with them. I like the casual friendliness between I Ling and colleague. It is so clear they are better suited. His roving eye is more to tease her than him actually being interested. His gaze following her and him getting her comfortable sandals as well as getting her to eat show how he really feels. He has matured enough to realize it has to now be unrequited because of his past immaturity, but he takes it on the chin and keeps looking after her. The single mom is also better suited for Xue You. She is calmer and kinder. Her child would be a good ballast between him and his mom. He would get his priorities settled much quicker with her. But she should not try to weave her and child into his life just because he is unhappy in marriage. With a child involved she should have kept better distance unless his circumstances changed. It is selfish and harmful to get him and her son so attached if he can not be a true father figure in his life. It is too confusing and misleading. While exploring distractions that can lead to infidelity, it neither strengthens the couple nor makes two stronger separate couples. The writer just keeps everything murky. While slices of life are often that way, it is unclear what point the writer is trying to make.

It is usually assumed to be a female problem, but in this case it isn’t. The humor they attempted in sample room I could have done without. It was just weird and unnecessary. 😝 Xue You is undergoing various tests and instead of comforting each other they curl up facing opposite walls. The crux of it is they don’t seem to know how to be a united front for each other. They can support similar efforts in career and in wanting a child, but it is still like each individually going through their own trial rather than growing together to rely on each other and become a single family unit. They can’t be truthful with his mom and barely with each other as they struggle through this experience. They have no tacit or verbal understanding between them. They are closer to their work colleagues than each other. And while this is supposed to be addressing serious matters with humor, it is just even sadder because the humor falls flat with the chasm between them. The actors are not at fault as they can act well. This is just told poorly via the writing. The script has little compassion for the actual couple and focuses on the peripherals. There are so many distractions that the couple gets lost in the background. They are never allowed to be each others main focus. So far in 8 episodes, there was only the one scene where they were truly together and in sync. After four years of marriage this isn’t cute or funny. We should have seen them in therapy, or couple seminars working together. Not him still at home with his mom and her still not in wife mode in her own home. They still have no real private time and are undermined as a couple by interested third parties causing distractions. They should be forging together to become stronger or saying their goodbyes and start really living apart. I am not even rooting for these two to become parents. They aren’t even a couple yet.

Mom’s healthy eating plan is not so appetizing. He gets oysters. She gets pig fat. The pressure is on for child making and her age is working against her. Single mom at work is getting too close to hubby and pharmacy guy is too close for comfort. Our couple needs a distraction free zone. There is too much stress for easy conceiving.

I Ling’s work colleague has officially gone into labor and everybody is gathered around midwife waiting for the arrival. The dad shows up with ring, but doesn’t propose just yet. This is the first time our couple has had and taken the time for a candid conversation. I Ling shares her fear of motherhood and Xue You comforts her and gives her a clearer perspective of past events. There is a sweet diaper changing class and it’s the first time I felt mutual chemistry from them. Her biological clock may have woken up and she is happily considering a real family with her husband. It is refreshing to see them on the same page and as a united couple with no outside influences. I have great hopes for them if he can get out of his mother’s house.

Auntie sent mom home after a day. She is appreciated there as much as at home. 😂 Right when our couple was finally getting couple time, mom arrived to ruin the moment. Xue You comes to the aid of single gal who is bombing at a job site. The owner is very mad and he calms things down and gives her some OJT so she will be better prepared for next job. He also gallantly takes the blame and spares her the harsh words from client. I Ling goes to pharmacy to pay for medicine and see handsome pharmacist again. The power goes out and our couple finds themselves in sweet romantic settings but apart not together. He see the stars and has a nice chat with the single gal, and she is playing campfire games with the cute pharmacy owner. She has reason to think that cute pharmacy guy is who she’s been chatting with in dating app. He might be thinking the same. Just enough time has passed for interested thoughts from the third parties and the power comes back on for our married couple to head back home.

The dad sure lives it up when ma leaves.😂 He is a whole other person. Their bbq plan turns into pizza party with dad’s order. The guys make a huge mess and I Ling rebels at cleaning up after them. She dresses up in a pretty dress and does her best to entice her husband to clear the table and come up for dessert. When she finds him still at play she reminds him again and watches tv with his dad. This turns into a pharmacy run. Cute pharmacy guy is a nice dream interlude for her when hubby fails to mention how pretty she looks. He finally clears the table, but destroys all the work she had finished. 😝 After she dishes out some revenge, she finds his sweet anniversary gifts. It was unexpected that he could exit playing with Lego long enough to buy them. So again when they should be most attuned and celebratory, they are most at odds and unhappy with each other. She can’t even blame his mom for this one. She is too angry and he is too obtuse.

Each work late and go out with co-workers. To be honest, I am surprised Xue You can spend that much time away from his mom🤣 He commiserates with his colleagues but leaves out the fact he’s not really left home yet and hasn’t begun to have any of the issues they do. He is most helpful with a single mom. Now at least we see what inspires him. He wants children, but hasn’t had the nerve to bring it up with his wife. She says the D word aloud with colleagues and they all even toast to it. She ends up waking at work and trying to get back before ma-in-law notices. Luck was not on her side. These two need to talk about what direction they want to go….just the two of them. Or maybe each a separate way. They don’t communicate privately enough to know if together or apart the best option. Mom is always in the middle. Too bad she didn’t really treat them with the respect and privacy she mentioned to her nosy neighbors. We also find out that I Ling was the parent for her siblings since she was ten. She already feels like she served her time as a mom. She’s still waiting to really get to be a wife. 😝

I Ling has tried every way imaginable to make plans for moving. She left no stone unturned to find a plausible way for them to get their own place. Right when she has Xue You ready to commit, his mom fakes sick and gets his money loaned out. I Ling even makes it past that obstacle but his ma is determined to keep them there. Now here is where I Ling should have used daughter-in-law trump card……no grandkids unless we get our own place. She would have been shoving them out the door and knitting baby items. Once moved she could take her time trying to get pregnant and tell her ma-in-law better luck next month.🤣 Hubby needs to grow a pair and become the man of his own house. At this point he seems a waste of time because while he is thoughtful and chases her down, his mom gets the priority so he dooms her to being room mate rather than wife. Until he gets that, she is better off without him. He needs to realize he is better off with her minus living at home with mom.

Lin I Ling has hit 30 and gets advice from everyone about how happy she will be when she becomes a wife and mother. She is not convinced until she literally runs into her Mr. Perfect. 🤣 the only thing I recognized about Jasper Liu was his beautiful smile…that hair🤣 she ironically works for a company that advertises love and creates dating apps. She is told to download on her phone and give it 5 stars. Her mother-in-law loves her family but her ‘help’ tends to show up at 5AM daily. Between her and hubby’s snoring, I Ling likes to take a day each week to contemplate divorce. Hubby refuses to cut mama’s apron strings and can’t fathom the idea of taking on a mortgage to have their own place. His life hasn’t really changed and hers is like the outsider looking in rather than feeling part of his family. The only plus for her might be her mom leaving her be. She is being pressed to provide grandchildren but continues on her path of no kids ever. With her circumstances, I can’t disagree with her. I think she honestly loves her husband the bit of time he lets himself be in that role, but he spends way too much time being the baby of the family and this falls very flat with poor I Ling. She wants her own place and some privacy and hopefully before drama ends she will get it.

The ultimate battle had very interesting results. The greatest surprise being revealed by the Grandmaster after the battle. I was like LingYu gaining grudging respect for ChuLan as the battle continued. That there was more to him than the shallow, shameless, cowardly, wannabe outsider. That there was depth to him after all. I am glad that BaoBao shared that vision of grandfather with ChuLan. It let him see there was more to learn about his grandfather’s story and that winning was as important for him as for BaoBao. This battle also had LingYu accepting his imperfections and finally coming to terms with them. His decision will now be opposite the usual so we have to wonder where that will lead him. That he didn’t have the expected reaction for the Grandmaster shows his heart is truly elsewhere and now to find where that will lead him. I think his future will be happier for him tho far from the expected journey everyone thought for him at beginning of competition. Since they are equally and oppositely matched it will be interesting to see these skills combined as colleagues rather than combatants.

These battles cleared the way for ChuLan and gave the history of the Wang and Feng families. ShaYan really needs better parents. She is powerful and demeaned at same time. I would rather she teamed up with BaoBao and told all of them where to go. 😝 while the battle with BaoBao and ChuLan was supposed to be ridiculous, I wish it would have been a bit less so. They had the entire audience out for them enraged at their audacity in cheating. LingYu is correct in his opinion of both of them😝 I also agree that the Wang contestant deserved the contempt and was as happy as the assistant in watching him literally get some sense slapped into him. It didn’t do any good, but it was a first lesson in civility. For as evil as I thought the Feng father was, he doesn’t hold a candle to the true evil of the Wang patriarch.
