What makes this show a great family drama is that it has a clear understanding of its genre.
The storytelling is strong and effective in narrating the purpose of the story, which is essentially to ask the audience what does family mean to them. This has been the central theme of the show and we see this asked repeatedly by the characters themselves. By exploring the life of the Kim family, the writers opened a way for us to examine our own family dynamics and seek our own definition of a family.
It's a highly character-driven story and one that is well-thought of. The main characters weaknesses, strengths, internal conflicts and goals were shown and used effectively to drive the plot and emphatize with the characters. You don’t always have to agree with them, but at least you know the place they’re coming from.
The drama is also full of subtexts used to create deeper meanings in the story. For ex., one of my favorite scenes in the entire show was the dialogue between Eun Joo and San Shik in ep. 10 about taking responsibility. There is another layer in Eun Joo’s words beyond what she was saying on the surface level. Once you became aware of that, it adds to the emotional impact of the scene.
I know this kind of drama isn't every one's cup of tea. Personally, I believe this is one of the best written stories in Kdrama this year :)
Ok, I’m in the episode 8 and up to now I haven’t seen a proper explanation to why Chan Hyuk didn’t tell…
That's a good observation and a fair point. Chan Hyuk could have told her the truth earlier. He is at fault on that. Eun Hee had the reason to be angry at him and act the way she did in that moment, and you're right that she didn't need to apologize for that. But, I do also feel that Eun Hee's apology has more to do with herself than with Chan Hyuk. I believe that she had to do that in order to be at peace with herself and let go of the past. They were close friends for a long time and her relationship with him is a part of her life that she feels unsettled with. Hence, maybe, the reason why the writer decided to reunite them again.
You're not the only person to mention twilight feels!
I see! Maybe it was the mood and tone of the show . The first time I heard the music score and the editing of the flashbacks. I was like. WAIT. Twilight?
The music score of this series is so good and by far my fave aspect of the show. A mixture of eerie, creepy, lonely, angsty and romantic. It totally elevates the storytelling. Also, I find that Kim Soo Hyun and Seo Ye-Ji both have beautiful and enigmatic eyes that instantly draws you in the scene and captivates you. Story wise, I want to see the backstory behind Moon Young parents.
Lastly, and weirdly, the romance section lowkey gives me Twilight feels. For some reason that I can't explain. Idk maybe it's just me. Great and solid show so far.
This was cute and sweet. It's over the top, cringey, and ridiculous. But, that's what makes it absolutely hilarious. No drama etc. It was just adorable and fun to watch.
This was not even on my watch list. Yet, I ended up binge-watching it and absolutely enjoyed it. It was surprisingly good and on some level relatable. Not much on the romance part but more on the adulting part. Definitely worth the watch.
The first episode was wonderful and heartwarming. There were a lot of great moments to ponder on. I'm also loving the cinematography. It has so many beautiful shots. I am excited to see the rest of the episodes.
