This is one drama that I have repeatedly watched over and over. In the author's other work, "Siege in Fog", the ML and FL are repeatedly tortured right through the ending and I'm very much like you, I hesitated to watch this one with the "tragedy" tag attached. A good script is one that will keep me watching, a phenomenal one is a story that could that haunts me long after it's over. So glad you loved it and thank you for writing an insightful review. I enjoyed every word.

That is my favorite thing about this drama. It doesn't shy away from the flawed.

You are right.....evil personified. I love Ling Xiao's reaction, though. The only way he will give up Li Jian Jian is if he feels his mother might hurt her.

I personally think that depression probably runs in her family (just my guess). Add to that the tragedy of losing a child, sprinkle on a work-a-holic first husband and whammo - all of the negative tendencies and behaviors come front and center without any control or stop button. That being said, I still have zero sympathy for the character because she emotionally abused her son. I'd love to have a forum built where the screenwriter could share his thoughts where these characters come from.

Nope. I always want to see romance in a drama.

I LOVE time travel and have since I was little (born in the 1960's). One of my first tv shows to watch was called "Time Tunnel". So, I'm wondering the same thing you did.... why didn't the mom die when she killed her younger self? Is there a separate timeline created when the same person(s) inhabit the same timeline?

The only other character that has given me rage issues was "The Story of Minglan" mother-in-law. It took me months to watch because of her.

You are spot on 100 percent. One of the main reasons I love this show is because it does not move away from the repercussions of the flawed parent. I'm a huge fangirl of this production for this reason.

Avenue X did a video on this very subject and hated the fact that the mothers were portrayed in such a negative light. I definitely understand this point of view but have seen the very subtle "do as I say and I will love you" type of behavior and it's disturbing. The children under this type of "guidance" grow up insecure, anxious and with a tendency towards depression. I think that's one of the reasons every time Ling Xiao's mom is on the screen, I pause and brace myself for the anger I get as a viewer. In real life, I've met this person multiple times with different faces.

I love your post and agree wholeheartedly. It's a rare drama that can take a flawed ML and not make it either too heavy handed or fluff over the not-so-great details. I like this drama because it has a story that deals with reality of flawed people.
