I’m interested in the story, but I’m not finding the relationships at all compelling. It feels like they’ve gone for style over substance, in a big way. Or is it just me?

That’s very like a basic general content warning. I wouldn’t call that a trigger warning, because it’s so generic. Trigger warnings need to be separate from credits and other warnings for the very reason that you remarked 🙃

I don’t think Khem’s reticence for the initial bulk of the novel works in the context of a drama. I like this change. He’s more interesting this way.

I don’t like being frightened, avoid horror, and am fine watching this home alone at night. Others are screaming. It depends on what grabs your viscera. There aren’t really any jump scares so far, which is why I’m okay.

If you’ve never dissociated completely your lack of understanding is totally normal. Please don’t assume it’s a failure of logic though. Some people experience dissociative amnesia, and untreated PTSD can mean peritraumatic amnesia lasts for years, if not life. I’m someone who has first-hand knowledge, and this is what it looks like in my case. I’m stopping watching this show until my own treatment is complete. That episode seriously needs a trigger warning 🚨
