As someone who’s not read the novel, all I know is that in the novel it’s transmigration of the soul as both XFF and JL died at the same time. In the novel JL actually took her own life when she found out that her fiancé wanted to switch the engagement to the sister. Where as the female female lead was murdered so you have one that wants to live and the other wants to die so XFF’s soul went into JL’s body. That’s why there’s never any confusion over her identity because by all appearances she physically looks like JL. Since reincarnation is a taboo subject, they couldn’t have this aspect of the story and past censorship..
