The thing is, Im half past the drama and I enjoy it very much yes, but the mystery aspect for me is not there lol? Maybe I watched too many dramas with palace intrigues that I can expect anything hahaha.
Btw you mentioned that you have yet to find another drama like NIV, personally I started watching NIF after it being recommended to me as a similar great drama as ´Joy of life´, its a really REALLY great drama, lack of romance but so many smart schemes and the main character is not only strong , skilled and a charismatic leader, he is extremely smart. ( like our main lead in NIF)
The only downfall to this drama is that it contains 3 season, and season 2 has yet to be published :( anyway im sure you will like it, NIF and JOF are both very similar!

Yes! Just reached episode 24, the incidents after ep 20 and the plot got so much more interesting after the whole birthday party event, I just hope they will keep it like that

Its like the plot goes on in circles but If I understand its like making us ready for the future hopefully epic incidents. Thats how it is in such long historical dramas usually, but I really wish they would get into the main plot already because it is getting too repetitive and boring right now. Ill update on episode 20

I started watching this I’m on episode 14 and I have mixed feelings about it, it’s just politics and genius schemes but I don’t feel the hype yet

I love this drama, I am watching nirvana on fire now... the big madam is absolute cutey, she might have bad temper but she’s real and straightforward which is so refreshing to see among the snakes

If you like this kind of plot I really recommend you to watch the story of minglan, it’s a chinese historical drama however but it’s about an illegitimate daughter of a concubine of a not high ranked officer, with her wits, talents and good brains she manages to woo everyone and become one of the powerful ladies

I have watched joy of life recently, I really liked it

It’s really fascinating that I am a sucker for romance, I cannot watch a drama without it, but this drama was SO GOOD that the only scenes I was skipping were the romance ones.
Everything else was SO Interesting that I couldn’t wait to watch what’s happening next.
I highly recommend this, 46 episodes felt like it’s not enough and I’m craving more and waiting for the season 2

It gets so much better once the real Politics and Fightings begin, I’d say watch it until he leaves to Qi as a diplomat

Should I still give it a try

I’ve had my eyes on this drama for a while however I’m afraid it would be too heavy for me. The heaviest drama I’ve watched was Empress ki which was amazing too, but I don’t think I can go heavier than that

I’m on episode 3 and it really bores me, I dropped it but seeing the high ratings makes me think if it gets better later

I like this drama, I gave it a solid 8.
If you expect only comedy and cute moments then this drama is not for you.
It gets a bit more complex and politics around the middle.
The chemistry between the main leads is amazing too
