I think you just failed to see the depth and nuance because you did not understand it. Ep 17 in itself is full of extremely deep and meaningful moments. From identity crisis to the FL's vulnerabilities, its full of those moments.

PingTing lived because Chu Zhao convinced the Emperor that she knew nothing which she really did not.
Even if He Yan's mom exposed a traitor, the fact that she knew everything for years and hid it willingly is a crime of decieving the emperor equal to treason. He would never pardon her and she knew she would only be a burden on He Yan who would try to save her

There was never any comparison between Chu Zhao and Xiao Jue for He Yan. She choses Xiao Jue every single time even when there is a brief misunderstanding between XJ and HY.

Lol what lie. Please tell me where she has initiated any conversation with Chu Zhao except in ep 14 where she she was fishing for information about her brother. It has always been him approaching her and she walks away from him every time.

Season 1 was definitely really good. It was a really fresh story too

For me this show is definitely a 10. But its very rare for shows to get over 8.5. Although it does feel that this show is being targetted a little bit (comments of similar tones, comparison with the same shows) , 8.6 is a good rating

Yeah no FP totally tanked in S2. They basically repeated the same struggles for the FL as S1. There was literally a repeated storylines on loop. S1 was pretty good. Sad S2 was so boring

I think I loved He Yan so much because she was a normal feminine cute girl in real life but absolutely kicks ass in her professional life. The duality was fabulous. And the chemistry of course so good.
