I like both leads. However, this mini is more like a running ad campaign.
All Jiang Shi Chi's short series are like that - the only thing that changes is what is being advertised... though usually it's skin care.

Is there any other drama of his??
The Republic day one had better timing with the subtitles when I watched on my iPad - the timing of the same drama on my computer was waaaaay off.

Yeah, I can GUESS a lot of it - predictable is the name of the game for these vertical shorts - but I still want subtitles!!!!

The length of the series shouldn't intimidate you since you have watched a few costume C-dramas with 49+ episodes…
I haven't been able to distinguish between Wu Xia and Xian Xia - how can I tell before starting?

I can't watch current dramas - it's not the ending, but my impatience that eliminates them as a possibility. I have to be able to binge. I blame streaming services for this quirk to my watching habits.

But I've regretted some that weren't Xu Kai-motivated. The problem isn't really the length - it's my addiction. I get too involved and lose track of time (i.e. watching too many episodes into the early morning) and lose sleep. So anything over 30 makes me hesitate even more.

I have long liked Dilraba and Leo Wei and when I saw clips of this series became immediately enchanted. That said, the length of the series intimidates me and I have waffled many times on whether to watch it or not. This article has swung me back towards the YES side, but even then I still have reservations. Thank you for the analysis, humor and hints as to coping. All the best.

Hello, there are 18 episodes of 10 minutes each. VIKI has only 8 because they combined them making only 8 episodes…
Youtube even as a playlist of the episodes so they'll just play back to back. By skipping ahead (the arrow button) during the initial title it immediately jumps to the brief recap and makes the story almost seamless.

This is too good to be a short series.
I know... I had the same thought after watching it for the eighth or ninth time. It seems relatively well developed but there is an edge of un-believe-ability due to the limited cast and small circle around these prominent noble families. However, I think the cast did an extremely good job, the immediate world was well developed and the costuming was lovely. Holes are holes but if it were a regular series these could be plugged up well enough.

I just upped my rating from an initial 8.5 to a 9.0.

Watching YM and XK in Great Escape made me want to re watch some of their scenes in SAHPH^^
They are great together on and off screen, I agree... but I really miss that steamy chemistry from SAHPH... but XK is also so unlike Yang Hua while YM seems a lot like Qin Shi! Still, they both seem to enjoy the camraderie of the group in Great Escape. I've enjoyed watching it whenever I can find it subtitled.

CHEMISTRY - I admit I am a major Xu Kai fan and that is what led me to this drama. He is such a different character in this - kudos in the extreme. Aside from that, the clips posted on youtube OOZE with chemistry and swoon-worthiness. I still peruse those clips when I want a quick pick-me-up.

CDramas are a new genre for me so I didn't know who Yang Mi was, but I recognized several other characters from other Xu Kai films... especially his bestie (Cai Liang), her initial mentor (Bian Jing) and her ex (Tao JunHui)... which tickled me. Yet I was impressed with the whole cast here, especially Li Dai and the "frienemy" nature of her character not shifting too much as her role and relationship with Qin Shi changed. Cai Liang had me in giggles as a perfect foil to Yang Hua's overt seriousness... without registering on the cheesy-meter. His silliness just seemed to be part of his character, not just a ham-it-up for the camera. And when he was concerned, giving advice or serious it didn't seem out-of-character either. Well done.

As for the story, I found the premise illogical but the progression not totally unbelievable. I loved how the leads worked together to pull themselves out of hot spots and how their relationship took time to blossom. Yes, the last few episodes were frustrating and a little jarring, but I was too engrossed to notice until afterward (even having read such comments before bingeing the series). Their support for each other and the choices they made, up until that point, were believable, heartwarming and demonstrated relationship-goals for the rest of us. The lighter moments balanced the serious tones of other times. All in all, it was a well put together film.
