Related to our discussion a little while back about YouTube, I noticed Tan Jianci's YouTube channel has resumed activity, yay! The Drop performance video was posted, and they also put the entire Tangent album in the Releases tab of the channel. So international fans have another easy way to listen! Not really specific scenes, more the vibe of ZYL‘s character generally. Like his arrogance, how he has fun with the heists, taking risks and the chase, taunting and misdirecting TJC‘s character, etc.

“Bury the sins, ready to spin, clean up the trace, fade from the scene / That bass line’s starting to groove”

And

“From the highway to the alley we’re on the run / from the morning to the night we’re having fun”

were the specific lyrics that got me thinking about ZYL’s character and then I realized the whole song sort of fits him

Our discussion has made me realize Drop is a great song to go with Empty Gun!

Wow, there were little kids? There wasn’t much violence, fortunately, but the scenes that had it were intense. I had to look away during the torture. It’s fascinating, though, that China’s censorship is so strict for things in production, but apparently not after they pass. And that they don’t care as much about violence.

It’s almost the opposite where I am: there’s not much, if any, censorship on content in production, but then after it’s made, there are ratings, restrictions, etc. Empty Gun didn’t have a rating because it’s foreign, but if it were domestic, I think it would definitely be restricted.

Mm yeah something like what he wore for the Dark Moments debut, but black. Or maybe a more sophisticated jacket with a V-neck underneath, like what he wore for an “Imma Get It” performance, I think it was the 2024 Douyin one or maybe Nanjing.

I think here he’s trying to go for a hitman/gangster look, and it’s mostly fine imo, but could be a little edgier.

That’s interesting, on Spotify it has the explicit tag, but no Chinese tag? This made me extra curious so I looked up what qualifies for explicit. Turns out even a single, solitary swear word can earn your song that tag, so yeah, I think it is “bullshit”. I don’t see anything else in the lyrics that would qualify. Just that one little word 😂

Not my fave outfit of his, but I liked it. The song has a more dangerous than seductive vibe to me, and I thought the outfit fit that pretty well.

Totally agree about the sunglasses, though. The way they kept slipping was distracting. Next time, better fitted sunglasses, or better yet, skip them and let us see those expressive eyes!

Great performance, especially the use of choreography with the background dancers! I love how he uses his dancers to present an interesting full stage show, not just focusing on himself with the dancers as afterthoughts

I thought he self-censored “bullshit” on stage and they replaced the word with “cheap trick” in the subtitles so they didn’t have to put blanks there. As far as I can tell, “cheap trick” isn’t part of the original lyrics.

By the way, is “bullshit” the reason the song got the Explicit tag? There’s nothing explicit in the lyrics that I can tell, but I know China has way stricter censorship

Yeah if you like the classic HK crime movies, this is definitely the movie for you!

The first thing he did when we got back home was look them up 😂 But there aren’t many, I hope they release more

I just saw Empty Gun in the theater and it’s so good!! My husband LOVED it. As soon as the credits started rolling, he turned to me and said, “I had fun watching every minute of this film!”When we saw Sound of Silence last year, the audience was all women except for him, but for this movie, there were a lot of young men in the audience as well. It’s definitely a manly movie haha but I enjoyed it too!

It’s very long, but thoroughly entertaining. I was never bored. My husband was unsure about the length going in, but now he wants to see the director’s cut with all the deleted scenes added back in! And I do too, the movie is fine without them but it did feel like we were missing some context at times.

Overall, very well done with a classic HK crime movie feel. Zhu Yilong is great, and of course it goes without saying, Tan Jianci absolutely smashes his role 😊

Same here!! 别放过 is my favorite, and I prefer the second half more, too. I also love Dive and Debater. I like Drop a lot too. It's not a genre of music I'm normally into, but this one is good. I especially appreciate it for using his deep voice. If I had one complaint about the album, it's that it doesn't use his deep range enough. I like his high range too, ofc, but he has such a phenomenal deep voice, I was hoping for a bit more of that. Overall, I really like the album!

I've been wondering the same thing! He seems to be using it mostly for performances, and he has so many more of those he could post, so I don't get why the channel isn't more active. Like you were saying, I remember the "Proof" music video got a copyright strike, which was crazy since it's his own song. Maybe because of that and because it's also harder to use inside China (IIRC, it's not exactly banned, but blocked so you have to use a VPN), he'd rather focus on other social media. But I wish he'd post more on YouTube, it's so much easier for international fans.

There used to be several fan accounts, including the official global one, that regularly posted his content with subs. Sadly, they've pretty much all stopped posting, as far as I can tell. It's harder now to find his interviews and livestreams with subs. Just means I have to get better at Chinese hahaha!

I love it too! He's so good at this kind of music. I'm not familiar with the female singer, but she does an excellent job as well.
