Really cool list! It seems like I should watch some heavier historical Cdramas in the future.
Each of those women is really impressive and I think, none of them is the typical c-drama heroine. Wonderful characters from a princes over great fighters down to a badass assassin. I think, I'm not the one for the cute girls. lol
The female c-drama characters, I got inspired by the most are:
- Hu San Niang, Sun Erniang & Gu Dasao from "Water Margin" - they are self-confident, they are though, they are beautiful, they are witty and intelligent, they are loyal against both themselves and their respective husbands, they take no shit from no one, they know how to fend for themselves without losing their womanly sides, they have brains to think for themselves and each of them gets treated and respected to 100% as one of the 108 Stars of Destiny and on an equal footing with all the men at Liang Shan Po without having to cling to their husbands, without having to play the dumb and stupid girl that needs help to survive and without having to fullfill cliches and dumb rolemodels c-drama is known for if it comes to females...
- Tan Qi and Yu Chang from "The Longest Day in Chang'an"...
- Princess Jieyou from the series of the same name, a historical character who lived from 121 BC – 49 BC, who lived among the Wusun for fifty years and who did much work to foster relations between the surrounding kingdoms and the Han...
- Xue Nu & Shao Si Ming from "The Legend of Qin"...
- Jin Zhuhai & Helan Tiedou from "Tribes and Empires"...
Good for you because had you seen the 90s, you might end up hating this new Dali prince. In this one...............…
The problem is not Ringo Yu's way to direct this, the problem is that we don't know what had to get cut by orders of the censors. And I'm sure, they forced him to cut numerous scenes down...why should they spare a Jin Yong drama from all the restrictions they use on other series...??? What do you think, why all those harmless dumb and dull romance dramas are allowed to air by dozens shortly after having finished filming and why those with a true historical background or with hints that the leads fight against oppression always need months if not years to air... The director of "Peace in the Palace, Peace in Chang'an" said in an interview that with all the cuts they want him to make, the drama has less than half of its episodes, which will make it impossible to understand. He said, he could not even sell it as an online drama or on DVD... So, to say, the directors are the ones to blame, if a drama seems to have strange cuts, is not always the only truth...

I'm really not sure, if we talk about the same drama. If the scene with the statue in the cave wasn't beautiful, I don't know... But each person seems to define beauty in a different way...so, I think, it's time for me to go on watching what's my first highlight of 2021 and leave you to the series, you consider your highlights of 2021, so far. No need to hit each other with clubs... lol
Where can I watch the 2003 version in good quality? I have a link on YT, but the video quality isn't really satisfying.…
Oh, I've no problem with watching c-drama raw even though I don't speak Mandarin. So many of my fave series never got subbed, so far... I learned a lot of phrases over the bygone years and the list of characters on wikipedia makes it easy to follow the events happening in DGSD - so, a link without subs would be welcomed at 100%. :D
I’m finding it pretty enjoyable. I’m a big Jin Yong fan and have read the novel and watched the 1997, 2003,…

Tell me, since when are women between their late twenties and early fourties considered OLD...??? What did you expect - one of those awful kindergarten costume-series full of little girls and boys who look as if they haven't gotten weaned, yet...???
Too many cut? You mean they race through the fights with each shot lasting maybe half a second? I didn't like…
The ratings, yes, one of the dumbest things invented by people ever. I said good bye to trusting any kind of rating, decades ago, and only trust my guts ever since... I've read so many books, I've heard so much of good music, I've seen so many good series and movies which got rated below 8,0 - and I've seen so much crap and trash rated 8,0 and higher... There is no way, I'll trust ratings ever again. Some of the underrarted series I think of a gems: "The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate", starring Chen Long, Nie Yuan, Mark Du and Zhang Jun Ning - all great in perfroming martial arts... "Water Margin" (2011) - totally underrated, but with one of the best casts ever gathered and numerous incredible martial arts and fight scenes... "The Stand-in", "Arrows on a Bowstring", "Emperor Shun" and numerous others... No, I don't give a damn about ratings, any more.

I know, what you mean. I think, we have some things in common, if it comes to the important ingredients of a wuxia or even a historical drama. My feeling is, 10 to 20 years ago, the directors and producers of a series had a deeper understanding for how to film wuxia or historical drama and even if the quality wasn't HD and digital, the passion in filming and acting made up for a lot of flaws and missing technical possibilities. They also had a generation of actors - now somewhere between their late thirties and early sixties - who were well trained in acting, martial arts, fighting techniques. So, thinking of these things, Ringo Yu brought a lovely cast together for this new adaptation. A cast with a lot of love, passion and enthusiasm - the characters feel vivid and alive and not superficial and flat like in those romance focussed stuff. Yu didn't cast idols, which also adds a lot to the production. Let's place a bet: Even the dumbest romance drama cast with idols will get a much higher rating than this one...and, even though it all depends on personal taste, of course, it's a thing that makes me sad. It's not about quality, acting, peformance and presentation , anymore... It'ss all only about idols, romance and ML begetting FL, now... So, even if someone would make the perfect wuxia drama - the screaming idol fangirls would always rather cheer for a pseudo wuxia-romance with max. four main characters all played by their fave idols...

I haven't read the novel, yet, and I haven't watched any of the other adaptations, yet, so, for me, it's new and absolutely great the way it is. I like the pace, I like the cuts, I like the series. It's 6 episodes in from 50, so, I'm far away from giving a rating, right now. I'm just enjoying a drama that is finally not any kind of stupid dumb and dull romance like the ones that aired in dozens over the bygone months.

The pace and the cuts are well-timed and cool and the fight scenes get all the time they need. At least this series doesn't need twenty minutes for a scene to explain what's going on, because the acting is good and Ringo Yu as actor-director knows how to film a wuxia drama. Well, as it seems, this is not a drama for the fast-forward generation...lol
just wondering, do you mean "Legend of Fei" and "Word of Honor" as Jin Yong novels fan, I really want to like…
I didn't watch "Word of Honor", yet, but when I finished "Legend of Fei", I was like: 'What a waste of great veteran actors'...
Excellent actors like Zong Feng Yan, Geng Le, Wei Bing Hua, Jing Gang Shan and many others, they all played roles that made them look like idiots who are not aware what acting is. Wei Bing Hua was so disappointed about the roles he, a trained martial artist and fine actor, got, that he questioned his profession. :(
But, actually, I mean all the series that get the lable "Wuxia" or "Historical" and have zero to do with history or wuxia at all. They are just costume romance and in parts so dumb and dull and stupid that it hurts with actors, who obviously never saw an acting academy from the inside.

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder...
