On Novoland: Eagle Flag Jul 16, 2019
As ist seems, they'll do an 'out of the blue' broadcast, tonight!!!
The premiere got announced for tonight.
I'll believe it, when the first episodes are up...but...well, there's always hope, right?

Ohhh! Thank you! Another one to check out for my ever growing list. lol

By the way: I just learned that "Novoland: The Eagle Flag" announced its premiere for tonight.
I'll believe it when I get to see the first episode, but as it seems, the "attack out of the blue" for historical/fantasy dramas will become the new release tactics for this kind of drama.

That one's still on my list. Now,even more!
I'm not sure, if you depend on subs. If not or if you don't mind to watch a great drama RAW, I'd suggest "Shaolin Wendao" to you.
I don't speak Mandarin, but that series, even though RAW, has such passionate performances that you get the story even without subs. The fantastic cast gathers around the outstanding Zhou Yi Wei and I really inhaled every single episode. It should be available on YT or dramacool.

Great insight to the different dynasties!
Many thanks for sharing those facts with us! Xie Xie!

As for "The Longest Day...":
It's one of the few series on my list to hit the full score. Same goes for "Shaolin Wendao", "The Stand-in" and my alltime fave "Water Margin" (2011). Sadly, none of those ever got subbed, which I think is a great shame.
On the other hand, better no subs than crap subs (you know what I mean).

Gladly, "The Longest Day..." gets the rating it deserves and compared with many other series rated on here, the rating is still way to low. If I could, I'd rate it 15 or 20 to compensate all the mushy romance dramas getting their 8/10 and 9/10...

It appears the second season has completed the censorship process. Youku just changed the episode count to 48…
Great news! And 48 episodes make sense, if one episode covers about 30 minutes in Chang'an during this nicely streched out longest day...

I don't think so, though great camera angle (and his English lines) I must say. There are a few scenes where it's…
Totally agree! The whole cast has a great chemistry and Djimon makes a charismatic slave trader. He has this aura, it needs to create tension around a character, which perfectly matches the tension the storyline creates.
What I also like: Director Cao Dun has kind of a permanent cast he uses in his dramas letting each of them try out different characters. That's what many great directors did/do:
King Hu, Tsui Hark, Zhang Yimou...
They use the chemistry the guys and girls built up to create on-screen magic. Sadly, this kind of directors are rare. One of the few, aside Cao Dun, who also works this way is Kuk Kok Leung. and I think, it pays off. For all parties involved.

I'm not afraid of giving it a try. I'm used to writing "historical" style ever since I started reading and writing.
As long as the essence of the Mandarin dialogue gets caught and as long as the meening doesn't get destroyed, it just needs some feeling for historical English to make it sound proper.
Many subbers don't have it. I mean, sometimes just some common sense would help if one's subbing a historical drama.
It's not mom and dad, it's not "hubby", it's not "OK". It's father, mother, husband and "yes", "aye", or "as you wish"...
It's just about to understand that modern day language kills off a historical drama.

That is sad, indeed!
I'm not fluent in Mandarin, but watching most of the series RAW, helped me to understand a lot of phrases and sentences without subs. I think, I could at least polish the English subs in a way that they'd (1) match the historical way of speech and (2) go without those many little mistakes in tense, phrases etc.
I'll see what I can do and contact VIKI.

Yes, I agree about the quality of the subs.
To be honest, I expected more.
I know that the subbers are no professionals, but still, a bit more devotion and correctness would make the whole thing a better experience.
I'd volunteer to correct the English subs, but I've no idea where to apply for it.
So, I'll go on watching RAW, still the better choice.

Yep, that's why I asked. Allthough, the English could have been recoreded on set and the Mandarin later on in studio. I was thinking about it, because his Mandarin has this slight French accent.
Nevertheless, he's an extremely chrismatic man and a very good actor.
The tension between him and Lei Jia Yin when Zhang Xiao Jing tried to free/get information from Ding Tong'er, was almost physical.
He's a great match for his Chinese colleagues.

Not since NIF have I been this blown away.
If they can keep this high quality standard till the end, it will end up in the annals of drama series as a masterpiece searching fot its kind. Absolutely captivating.

For Youku VIP members, the first twelve episodes is now available for viewing (June 27th 2019)Zhang Xiao Jing…
This is soooooo good!
Haven't watched such great opening episodes for felt ages!
Thrilling from the first to the last second.
Cool cast, excellent cinematography, cut and filming.
Excellent balance between action and dialogue scenes.
And finally no damsels in distress and babyfaced heroes to solve her problems in bonbon coloured settings...

Title L.O.R.D. Critical World Spoiler
The only thing, I'd probably really crtitcise: Zhang Ming'en should find his own personal acting style. He tried…
No season 2 needed. But the chemistry of the cast was cool. Would be nice to see some of them working together again in a new project.
