Treasure at Dawn or Legend of the Magnate? Recommendation please?
Legend of the Magnate is perfect โฅ๏ธ if you desire EPIC historical dramas with โsomeโ romance (but definitely enough to make you enjoy watching if you are primarily geared towards romance dramas,- which I def am). The MDL postings have been especially lively and I have enjoyed learning about that time in Chinaโs history. The directing, costumes, attention to detail, acting, writing, dialogue and story progression have all been exceptional ๐
The leader was a preacher who proclaimed himself to be the brother of Jesus Christ. I kid you not. Truth is stranger…
"More anti-Manchu than anything else" Just noticed that this is why General Li's hairstyling is different! Duh! ๐คฆโโ๏ธJust made that connection- thx PBG!
The poem is very widely quoted and originates from Shijing ่ฏ็ป of the Book of Songs, one of the Five Classics…
Glad to know that I wasn't the only one getting that questionable vibe from the novel. Gotta admit, I DO love my romances straightforward at the end and thriller/detective dramas as complicated, twisty and complex as can be... ๐ ๐ ๐

From the part I skimmed in the later part of the novel, there is a surprise stirring Gu feels when he finds out that BY is pregnant with the general's child. So first love indeed is still very powerful. I am also curious to know from full length novel readers, ML's true feelings for Chang Yu'Er. Because I couldn't easily tell from what I skimmed... Somehow in the drama I think they will end it with having the ML be solidly in love with Yu'Er.

Thank you posting the literal translation โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ and Brilliant Point! "A scholar would know that ๅๅญ can mean a missing husband, lover, friend, a spiritual guide or a wise leader or master. Gu Pingyuan hears what she is saying and for the second time, his only answer is silence." Gu the scholar would def know her intent with this poem selection. Loved how the director/CX ended the scene with silence combined with the misting of his eyes. ๐
Ep 12: Timestamp 3:57. If any native speakers can please take the time to translate the poem "Gloomy Winds and Rain; roosters crow without cease. Having met you, my dear. I couldn't rejoice more" if the English sub-titles didn't do it justice. I would appreciate it. Thx! ๐ค๐ค๐ค
Any history buffs ๐ช, what time frame in the Late Qing Dynasty do you estimate this drama taking place ๐ค? I'm trying to gauge events with when the dynasty actually fell... Thx!
My favorite kiss scenes (ala Story of Kunning Palace ) is when the ML eats the face off the FL like he is verifiably…
This!!!!!!!!!!!!!๐๐๐ ZLH is the king of mouth eating kisses ๐. Was shocked that the ML from When the Phone Rings could actually give ZLH a run for his money...
I suspect itโs her own voice. One of those cases where a pro voice dubber would have been a better choice. Character…
" I also have pointed out elsewhere that people who read subtitles will be much less sensitive to this than native speakers." Bravo! Well said! ๐๐๐ As a sub-title reader I always find it interesting and appreciate it when native speakers point out good and not-so-good line delivery, prose etc. , especially when it is apparent in costume dramas. I have even read where there have been instances where the incorrect modern use of the language has infiltrated historical dramas via engravings on tombstones or signs. Personally, I am absolutely enjoying the FL but exactly like you said, it makes sense why native speakers do not and how it can pull them out of the drama experience at times. Conversely, bc I dont speak the language I might be more sensitive to beauty aesthetics and find that no matter the speaking skill level of the actor/actress, modern anti-aging facial procedures can easily distract and pull me out of historical dramas . Maybe that is one of the reasons why I find this FL especially refreshing in a historical setting? ๐ค
you are making me curious now... which other 2 are the ones that gave you satisfaction?
Fantastic story, direction, visuals, acting- it would have been rated much, much higher (has an 8.0 which is absolutely excellent for a mini-drama), but has a BE. Though the ending does make senseโฆ
