I was concerned to watch it at first because of the reviews but I’m glad i did. Because it was very solid. Binge-watchable and again, showcased great acting performances (including the supporting cast) What is lacking in thriller kdramas ever since 2021 is the character depth for main characters for me. The shows have good acting and cinematography but often plot-driven rather than character-driven. That is also up to preference.
People pointing out plot holes and off-logic parts as if the other action dramas does not have those… I suggest people to ignore the comments and watch it.
This season felt like a joke overall They left most random people possible to the final games, literally npcs. Nobody cares if they die or live. So what was the point? No woman in the final games, female characters died in the most absurd and anticlimactic way Side actors had more screentime than the main actors listed in the lineup. Player 100 was so boring and annoying 333 is not interesting or entertaining, he was just an asshole and infuriating to watch. Like where is the motivation, background, character build up? So lame I’m not even gonna talk about the police, never have i ever seen a more useless character in a show. He searched for that island for years, just to say “hyung” and leave? Bye 3 seasons and no explanation about frontman’s goal. Lastly who really gives a damn about an American squid game?
Based on the leaks, scenes they filmed that shows why it didn’t pass censorship (There are SPOILERS from the novel, don’t scroll down if you’re planning to read):
-scene in which Moran and Shizun stuck in a coffin together -Wedding Scene in red robes, bowing down together -Taxian jun destroys Shizun’s guqin -Taxian jun dragging him by force and humiliating him -Taxian jun choking him while Shizun is tortured, (Shizun says he failed him in the novel) -Taxian Jun carrying him in a bridal style -Taxian Jun crying and touching the haitang tree -Hot Springs scene (in the novel Shizun comes back from 5 years of seclusion and they met in the hot springs) -Moran puts Shizun’s hand on his heart -3799 steps scene -Holding hands and hugging -Moran gets hurt and Shizun helps him -Scene in which Shizun touches Taxian jun’s forehead with the tip of his finger slightly and dies -Scene in which Moran rests his head on Shizun’s shoulder and Shizun caresses him (chapter 279)
Will it ever air?
-At this state it seems unlikely that hyx will air anytime soon -Hyx failed to pass censorship multiple times, it means they need to censor the censored version for it to air. However, in the source material, the story is based on two main characters misunderstandings and their passionate love. Censoring too much would erase the core of this drama. -Probably the reason why it hasn’t aired is that they still wait for the best time to air, so they can air it with the closest version to the original cut. -“The censorship eased up, now they film cBL’s so why not hyx air?” None of these BL dramas are broadcasted in Mainland China, queer content is still banned especially for mainstream media. -Both Luo Yunxi and Chen Feiyu are now top tier actors, so if there’s any controversy surrounding the drama, they will be affected since the fanbase is huge. -On top of that, they can’t promote this drama at all.
Will regulations change?
-We don’t know, we know that China is governed by some sort of dictatorship. So it’s unlikely that it can change very easily. -Recently, the strict Kpop restriction in China was lifted after 9 years. That’s a good sign. -Phases come and go, but it takes a while for regulations to settle for the best. -Even if the ban gets lifted, the chances of tencent and actors promoting this drama is low. Since it’s been years. We’re lucky if we get to see it being broadcasted in streaming platforms.
Will tencent give up on this drama?
-Probably no, this drama is a high production even for today. It’s an S+ drama that is highly anticipated even still. So tencent will release this drama one way or another, but at what cost, we don’t know.
I hope this is helpful for the people who wants to know Hyx’s whereabouts.
Watching cdramas these days does not give the same feeling as this. As much as i love seeing the artistic direction, technical improvements in the dramas, it seems that all the actors and actresses are just there to look pretty and look good on camera. Costumes, settings are too precise. They don’t give nostalgic feeling, even the wuxia ones. Look more like a screenplay or diorama. I’m not saying the new dramas are bad, but we need more realistic representations like this in the industry. I don’t know, maybe because of the acting performances, but i just keep coming back to this.
The saddest part of this not airing is that it’s the most accurate protagonist casting I’ve ever seen for any type of adaptation and the uncut version would’ve been the most compelling Chinese drama. It hurts to see the lost potential.
I was a high school graduate when this drama was done filming. I remember talking to my online friends saying i can’t wait to see it in a few months. Now I’m graduating uni….
This was by far the best bullying revenge kdrama I’ve ever watched . Way more realistic and striking than the ones that’s higher rated here. There’s not a single good character or hero in this show. Even the victims are not innocent. They’re mentally unstable and abusive in so many ways. I liked how this show didn’t make the story about the victim-offender a competition, so you don’t stand for any character. It just shows the trauma, the outcome, misery, unending hatred and its consequences. It has a lot of tws though. I’m just going to pretend the cat scene in ep 6 doesn’t exist.
