Somewhat. Only one of the three main plot lines driving the show (imo) was concluded. And there's a major cliffhanger…
IMO, here's a few: 1) Although the fight scenes were extremely good and memorable, I wished the final fight would have stayed true to the novel since it was AMAZING to read. 2) Sangsang's ability is so weak and she does some dumb stuff in the show compared to the novel. She's also somewhat sidelined in the show and many of her parts are given to the other women, making her seem to be a supporting cast and not a main character. 3) Ning Que's talisman ability is completely disregarded, along with many other things he has cultivated and learned. The show became lazy and simply puts in a few words here and there to say that Ning Que is amazing by others.
Reading the novel and I am up to chapter 668 and Viki has subbed up to episode 52. A few thoughts:* Viewers are…
I'm also reading the novel and have loved it so far. Like you, I'll continue the show and am super excited about the next season, hoping they'll show the epic fights that's about to go down. Also, the whole show isn't as graphic, tragic and sad as the book, which is a small grievance I have, but it's okay.
Anyway, totally agree with you about some of the wtf moments. I laugh at some of them (I find it extremely funny how Ning Que's lewdness isn't shown so much in the show and only his mischievousness and cheekiness stands out). I was excited to see the miniture Chang'an in the array room, but what they did was cool, too, though they should have shown him teleporting to more places. Mine was when Sang Sang moved back to her parents'. It was so wtf. I'm annoyed that she got hit and was crying all the time when she did no such thing in the novel. She's so much more mature in the novel, although younger.
I will admit that I love the portrayal of some of the actors a lot more than the actual characters within the book (Ning Que, Chen Pi Pi, Ke Zi, the emperor). So great. I also love Song Yi Ren, but I wished they made her intelligence stand out a bit more, similar to the book. I'm also super disappointed that they completely ignored Ning Que's talisman development and usage since he uses that a lot in the book, though I do understand that it would take lots of time, money, and effort to create all the graphics for it. And I do love how some of the scenes in the novel were changed in the show because it made more sense to me that way and also made me like it more. For example, I felt it was better how Ning Que ended his romance with Mo Shan Shan and how he had given her the eyeglasses in the show instead of keeping it as a "backup" to Sang Sang like in the novel. Also, Ning Que cares a lot more about Sang Sang towards the end of the show compared to the book. Oh, and the bromance between Chen Pi Pi and Ning Que in the show is great!
is the first season complete enough for me to watch it or am i going to have to wait for season 2 for a cliffhanger…
Somewhat. Only one of the three main plot lines driving the show (imo) was concluded. And there's a major cliffhanger at the end, so it's up to you. I will tell you now that you might be like me and be sad and annoyed about the cliffhanger.
When I watched the first eps I thought she might have secretly made the game... I wish!
After ep 9, I'm hoping that PSH will join the game to help find Hyun Bin, instead. I'm guessing that the Chan Yeol's quest was so that he can switch places with Hyun Bin and escape the game. Super anxious because of the cliff hanger!
I also hope the second wife/ex-wife will contribute something to the story, otherwise her role and screen time…
LOL for reals. Such a useless character. And I don't think there needs to be a side character to "make" the main character's virtues stand out. That's just lazy script writing.
If people don't believe he's still seeing that dead guy, can't he or his secretary just put on the lens and connect…
I'm hoping the mystery will be cleared up and it doesn't become a plot hole. I think they tried to explain Mr. Cha as a glitch, not being there but somehow still there because they can receive experience points upon his death, but the explanation doesn't fully make sense that no one else can see him when he is actually in the game and the others are watching. Everything else has made sense so far.
I'm loving the show, but I wish Park Shin Hye and Hyun Bin's role could have been switched. How much cooler would it have been to see a female gamer and a caring male at her side? And that would have been an amazing new role for Park Shin Hye to play.
Mostly what namopanik said. You can't review a drama that hasn't fully completed because you can't judge a whole…
Thanks. I can breathe a little easier now and cross your name off the list of potential enemies - not that I was keeping track. (Jeez, my jokes sound horrible and don't fare well on the big, wide web. Sorry if I seem snarky.) You are right, though. I shouldn't judge so early. It's a big flaw of mine. The only reason I reviewed it so prematurely was because my opinions (if they're negative) are usually hard to change because there's not a lot of things that irk me besides a weak or stupid female (or a weak & stupid female/character), which romcoms in dramaland tends to portray too often. And I usually love cliches and character tropes, but the damsel one is just used too often and has become annoying to me. I guess I just needed to vent a little. Might even start a discussion thread soon.
You can always repost it as an episode review or start a discussion thread dedicated to the first week of episodes…
I'll keep the episode review and discussion thread ideas in mind. You are right and I do agree with the points you made. Ratings are easy to change as opposed to reviews, so I understand why the topic died.
So far, I'm loving almost everything about it, i.e. plot, magic, action scenes, characters, but am very unhappy about the strength of Oh Yeon Seo's character going on a downward spiral and becoming another damsel-in-distress. Will continue to watch this show and hope it improves.
**Also, ooops!! Might have made a few enemies because of my early review that I've since deleted (mainly due to the fact that I didn't read the rules and posted thoughts about the show...although I'm confused as to why my personal thoughts/opinions shouldn't be posted as a review but ratings are perfectly acceptable? - I didn't rate yet, just fyi.) Sorry, not sorry.
