Yes, you're right too. We usually view this based on our own personal experiences. And I liked Yumi too even though I don't relate in all her struggles. I love her character bec she feels not too far-fetched from a real person. She feels like she could be a next door neighbor, an officemate, or an old friend. Her character could actually be anybody out there. I just like how ordinary she is.
I agree. I think aside from the double standards in judging the characters, the thing is some of us finds Yumi's…
I actually once read a comment here saying she/he/they now realized why they hated Yumi at first -- it was bec they see themselves in her. And I think that's a good realization. What you said is true too. I also think that's one of the problems of us being an audience to all of this --- we sometimes forget that as viewers we have the access to all the characters' different perspectives while the character themselves just know their own perspective. They act, feel, and make decisions just based on what they know. We see the whole picture but the characters don't, and we know what they should have done or should have not done bec we see this us outsiders. The sad thing is we sometimes easily judge a character while forgetting that.
To be honest I think we allow ML more space to be more imperfect. Where as I feel like we criticize FL a bit more…
I agree. I think aside from the double standards in judging the characters, the thing is some of us finds Yumi's relatability so subconsciously terrifying that they tend to dislike her. I guess for some people seeing themselves in a character is comforting but for others it isn't the same case; it may be terrifying or annoying or uncomfortable for them in a way.
Seeing your own real self, thoughts, insecurities, and all the other possible "ugly" bits of being human and imperfect projected in a character may bring comfort to some but not to all.
Btw I'm just curious..What do you guys think would have been the sequence of filming yumi cells and my name for…
I think My Name came first. It was filmed on the last part 2020 up to the first two months of 2021. Netflix Korean production always takes longer time in their post production than the usual Kdramas timeframe. Yumi's Cells just started shooting this year.
Babi is so quick witted and sensible. He can sense Yumi is wary and so he quickly shared he has girlfriend every…
That's right. Babi is very perceptive and attentive and because of this he's able to know and predict Yumi's feelings and thoughts despite Yumi being unable to express them well. That's something that Woong actually lacks. π
I have had enough with Woongi clothes, I know he is supposed start-up wanna be look, but at-least given him some…
πππ€£ Even in the Webtoon, Woong's fashion choices were really questionable. Woong's fashion cell is still not shown in the drama. If I can remember it correctly, Woong also has a fashion cell so maybe later on his fashion will improve. Just maybe?
Some woke people are pissed for no reason so maybe that's why.
Yes, 2.0+% tv ratings is actually good considering the timeslot. This one airs at 10:30 pm KST and that's considered decent for quite a late timeslot. This can't be directly compared to HCCC's ratings because HCCC airs at a prime timeslot (9PM KST) where more people are expected to watch at that time. Yumi's Cells too airs at 10:50PM KST, actually a very late timeslot. Both Hometown and YC are doing good considering their timeslots. Timeslots are very important in considering ratings; a small number doesn't always mean the drama is doing poorly. π
Ep 6 is not great. I was annoyed at both of them. Both acted mad childish
Ep 6 actually introduced what Yumi and Woong's relationship weakness/es just in a comical way. They lack good communication between each other. Both their problems in episode 6 could actually be solved by just talking and being honest with each other but they both didn't do it and their problems got out of hand because of this. π My guess is that after this last episode, it won't be all flowers and rainbows in their relationship.
I noticed that you keep mentioning in your arguments that Yumi is a 32 year-old character with nothing going on…
From my understanding, you've called Yumi's character weak in more ways than one.
Exhibit 1: She literally dosent have any objective in life, only thing that interests her are dudes and thats it. She cant be happy by herself or find happiness in anything else, a weak character indeed." Exhibit 2: "There is nothing wrong with being a hopeless romantic but when romance becomes your only outlet of hapiness is where it gets wrong. She is 32 and other than getting married she dosent look forward to anything else in her life. "
I'm not here trying to antagonize you or anything, I'm just here to have a sound discourse, an exchange of ideas. My only advice is that maybe let the story simmer first. Yumi's Cells webtoon has 500+ eps; we're just on ep 4 of this drama version and there is S2 already. Maybe, you'll find the answers to your questions later on.
P.S. I didn't say we are not layered and I don't think that we are not layered. I just said that having nothing going on in your life at a certain age or not completely figuring things out about yourself is normal. People like them exist.
Yumi is a boring 2 dimensional character with nothing going on in her life, very unrelatable.
I noticed that you keep mentioning in your arguments that Yumi is a 32 year-old character with nothing going on in her life. I don't know how old you are now but you're lucky if you're younger than Yumi and at whatever age you're in at this moment you somehow managed to find your "objectives", "purposes", or reasons for your existence in this world. You see, in life, it doesn't matter if you're 32, 20, or 45. Time ticks differently for everyone. There are people out there who could be 60 years old now but haven't truly understood their selves, their wants, and needs. They're just probably stuck in the routine called their life and just go with it and live aimlessly.
Also, I don't understand why a woman who's 32 and "other than getting married she doesn't look forward to anything else in her life" is considered "weak" by our society. I don't know why we usually paint women like them as "weak" and judge them as if they owe to us to aim a different dream. There are women out there who just want to be married, find love, and probably be a mother. Maybe, that's their objective or purpose and that doesn't mean they're "weak".
Again if you've managed to figure things out in your life right now, then that's good for you. There are others out there who are not as lucky as you.
SPOILER AHEAD: Also, Yumi is an artist. She's a writer as you would eventually find out as we go on with her story.
This kind of genre has a niche market. It is aimed to appeal to a specific audience and not specifically meant…
My apologies if I thought you were talking about tv ratings and not mdl ratings. But I guess the confusion came from the part "stuck with lower ratings". Isn't it too early to assume that this one is going to be stuck with lower ratings? We literally have just two episodes of this drama; that mdl rating is surely bound to change as this one comes to its completion. But still I disagree with the overall sentiment because it is an overgeneralization to assume that most romantic dramas have higher ratings despite more "shallow plots" compared to these kinds. I just don't see the point of dragging the said genre and its audience for their preferences. And still, having a higher mdl rating is not everything. Mdl ratings are subjective, after all.
It's a shame that fluffly romance dramas get higher ratings while gems like this are stcuk with lower ratings.
This kind of genre has a niche market. It is aimed to appeal to a specific audience and not specifically meant to be mainstreamed. Of course, it is expected to have a relatively lower ratings compared to those that are made specifically for bigger audience. I don't get why the "fluffy" romance genre needed to be dragged into this. It's not as if it's the romance genre's fault that they do get a much higher ratings. If it reached its target audience then it is considered a success already. Having a higher rating is not everything nowadays.
Dont believe this websites review this drama was down rated due to their stupid reason . If you watch ep 2 you…
π Let's just give OP the benefit of the doubt. Maybe OP had a change of heart and changed the rating? I just hope OP just enjoys all the CA SK dramas without any biases. Let's all enjoy a good show and give it the merit it truly deserves. π
Dont believe this websites review this drama was down rated due to their stupid reason . If you watch ep 2 you…
OP also rated some of the CURRENTLY AIRING (CA) SK shows and the two recently released Netflix originals ALL with half a star... OP gave half a star to those CA shows except one (HCCC). I think we can know what's really happening here based on this. Sad but some people really resort to this kind of low things.
I read the first ten chapters. Do really adults read this sort of thing?
Yes, some adults read this sort of thing. I couldn't see why not. If you still can, just continue reading it I assure you it just gets better and more relatable. The cells are just a creative depiction of our thought processes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did while reading it, that is if you decided to continue it. π It's actually tagged as Slice-of-life genre in webtoon because it's really relatable.
