Yeah, novel is alot more complicated. In the novel she was in love with Xuan Qing which was Chen Yan Yun son in the novel(1st life). Xuan Qing was a bastard. Jinchao wasn't a good person either in her first life. So this kind of story isn't really suitable for a drama. So they had to change quite a bit for public audience.

romance before marriage, divorce letter didn't happen in the novel. This is a rebirth novel, as she lived her life until age 37 and then woke up young again.

You shouldn't get hang up on the novel too much. Think of this drama like something very loosely based on the novel. There are quite alot of differences.

thats great. in regards to chinese costume dramas its my favorite along Yanxi Palace & Eternal Love (Yang Mi). Ming Lan is the most realistic one.

Yeah, seems like they have combined novel Gu Lan/Gu Lian into Drama Gu Lian. Seems similar to how they did with the adopted sister in Rise of Ning.
I also prefer how some people in the Gu family have been treated in the drama compared to novel. Some got off way too easily in the novel
