bon appetit your majesty is rated 8.5 and this is rated 8.2??? what a joke! it's so sad when we'll written, meaningful…
Slice of life drama tends to do less well than Romance dramas & dramas with adrenaline effects both in ratings & global ranking. By episode 8, I can see the writer decides to focus on characters rather than the plot. The plot tempo itself is a bit affected by this decision.
It is surprising that the ratings did that well for a drama of such genre. Today is a GMJ episode with less focus on thrilling business aspects . So, the viewership ratings may be affected by this. Tomorrow, we will see.
Before it aired, I thought it might be 'Itaewon class' or 'Vincenzo' kind of genre. But it is not. It is more like 'Misaeng' in a strange way.
Before Typhoon Family aired, I watched 'Alice in Borderland Season 3'. In the last game, ppl ended up doing things on their own in spite of male lead's clever instructions. It frustrated me to no end as a viewer ,but I understand it is part of the plot.
Though we are saying that how much a drama can avoid cliches, a drama certainly has its set patterns according to its genre. For survival genres like 'Liar Game' 'Squid Game' 'Alice in Borderland', the set pattern is ppl doing things on their own out of greed in spite of the lead's strategy.
'Typhoon Family' is a business coming of age drama. After 8 episodes , I realize why it is called 'Coming of Age' drama. [https://youtu.be/gDUmwomnc54?si=KT_Y3NoPL2BI3xoi ..The edit is pretty great.] It is the story of a young man called Kang Tae poong who lost his father & starts to follow the footsteps of his father. He is a rookie business man who is slowly learning through his business ventures. He will meet with people his father worked with & form a family with them. It is this kind of story. It is not about high stake business trade. It is about meeting people & the story of Kang Taepoong's growth, It is not only Kang Taepoong but also other members of Typhoon Family. For the plot development, each character will face the hardship ,but nobody can intervene in individual arc like a plot set pattern. The writer sets it up like that. As viewers, we can only wait & see how it is going to unfold for each character .
It is the last time I am talking on this topic. If it is a Romantic Drama , I am sure Kang Taepoong has already played a knight with no literal consequences, But it is a Business coming of age drama, Mi Seon needs growth. The time is 1990 where misogyny was a common thing especially in areas Mi Seon is planning to work in. Kang Taepoong respected his employee's wish and laid low ,but encouraged her when she needed that .He became this kind of CEO rather than using over-authorization nobody wanted & complicating things. It is for Mi Seon's growth ,at the same time showing Tae poong's growth as CEO . Rather than emotional brat he once was, he actually listened to what other party wanted. Without Mi Seon emotional arc, will her growth be as touching as they are? If you can't even stand that, I want to say you are watching the wrong genre. You should change to other genre that will do that . Because in this genre. these are the things characters will face head on. Downvoting a drama everytime a character faces hardship is nonsense .And for this kind of drama, there will be none left when the drama ends because this is exactly kind of drama, characters face hardship.
chill.. she herself didnt want him to do anything..
Or should we end the conversation by agreeing your point? The female writer sucks at writing her male character. It may be because it is her first time. She wants to write a female character development arc so much that unknowningly makes her hero into a less sensitive one.
Considering it is a male centric drama, the male lead should be a knight protecting his female lead. Instead of female lead rejecting his offer to help,it should end with the male CEO protecting his female lead from evil GMJ and MS thanked him with a smile on her face. then happily going to the party in swoony mode . Not a female lead who is struggling with her own identity and not ready to accept male lead's feelings. It will move the plot much faster than this. It will make the drama so much better. Why didn't she write it like that?
First of all, that old dude forgot he's not the boss who hires people. Secondly, they had another woman too in…
Typhoon Company is not a company that is doing so well in IMF. The company is only in name. And do you really think it is only KTP s decision to bring GMJ back? When FL scolded him for purchasing safety shoes without telling her ? And both of them were waiting for GMJ & helmet manufacturer? Really?
Both TP & MS knew they only passed the first trial because of Busan business woman's help. Both of them knew they needed a mentor & decided to call GMJ back. GMJ may be the staff in name ,but without his connections ,they wouldn't even be in Thailand. So in this trade, GMJ is a leader & business partner.
Ppl are acting like ML can scold him & kick him out of the company because he is bad. No, MS & TP are standing his behaviour because they know they need him, his business connections to do business.
chill.. she herself didnt want him to do anything..
Back to you, you are the one who may not understand this well because I wrote a long ass paragraph above . This is why you don't know the writer's intention at all. Script writer Jang Hyun is a South Korean woman, who would understand South Korean women than her. The writer wants to make Mi Seon stood up for herself because this is how all South Korean women do in the working force.
She doesn't write the female lead as a woman who needs a man in shining armor because this can only leads to office gossips and rumors of female incompetency back up by higher ups. She wants her female character prove herself without male lead. She knows a man can't solve these issues ,only a woman can.
And I hate this talk of 'Only I understand Misogyny South Korean women are facing' . A lot of those who have different opinions from you understand this. Not only you. And the writer herself is a South Korean woman.
chill.. she herself didnt want him to do anything..
KTP never heard Misogynistic remarks because GMJ said all of these to MS behind TP back. As audience ,you see 360 doesn't mean all characters know all things on their own.
What KTP see is a senior trader hasn't recognized a junior trader because he hasn't seen her potentials yet. MS scolded TP when he purchased 'Safety Shoes' though TP was a CEO. Yet, she couldn't say a thing to GMJ because GMJ is technically her department senior.
The Hot conflict between a senior & junior. If TP took a side, what would happen? Later, he tried to take her side, but it backfired with Majin saying Mi Seon was like this (crossed her boundry, disrespected her senior) because CEO took her side. This was why MS told Taepoong not to do anything more. It was MS who told him to do nothing. TP did try to ease their tensions in his little way. Don't forget he is an inexperienced CEO. MS didn't say all things GMJ said, back to TP either. How would he know ? Only thing he could do is to encourage her through words , that he believed her ability though GMJ didn't recognize it.
The drama is created by Female director and Female writer duo. In South Korea, work gender discrimination really…
I usually upload links , or share infos here. But ,today I would like to say a few things. Personal feelings only. Not representing anyone.
A few said oppa fans were protecting the male lead character. Not everyone here on this page is a oppa fan. This is for sure. A lot of them are normal drama viewers who happen to have a different opinion from you. Another one, if Taepoong plays a Knight. oppa fans are the first ones who should be celebrated first. Oppa is so Cool>> Female viewers swoon >> Actor get more fans. For not writing the male lead as a crazy cool knight character, oppa fangirls should be the one who should be mad at the writer.
The writer created her female lead character as an independent woman who wanted to stand up for herself which was quite appropriate for a woman of her position (younger female staff who hadn't got widespread recognition & wouldn't like to be centre of office gossip) that time . So the female lead character rejected the male lead character's help in this drama. Some are standing with the writer's vision and trying to explain that in possible ways.
You can form your own opinion, and other viewers can write theirs back or defend their opinions as long as they are polite. So,please don't call names to anyone who has a different opinion . Thank you. As I said, it is my feeling only, and not representing anyone.
The drama is created by Female director and Female writer duo. In South Korea, work gender discrimination really exists . It was featured in dramas like 'Misaeng'. Pregnancy leaves & rights are denied & looked down which can also be seen in this year 'Law & The City'. For international audience, MS & GMJ conflict may be seen as a drama plot device. For Korean females, it is the reality they are facing at their workplace everyday. It is a Korean drama ,so the reality is close to the issues South Korean women are facing everyday. The issue still exists today, you can imagine how much it could be worse in 1990 .
Before the drama, our female writer Jang Hyun interviewed the survivors of IMF how IMF affected their daily lives to bring complete perfection of the era . As a South Korean woman, she, herself must face these issues in the working industry. 'A woman doesn't to prove herself better than men.It isn't necessary' .It is international audience perception . But maybe it isn't like that in South Korea. A woman has to prove herself so that she can be treated equally as men at their workplace.
https://x.com/jhpengpeng/status/1985255493124653535?s=19 In the original script, Kang Taepoong doesn't even know Mi Seon is upset. But the director & male lead actor discussed the scene & they felt that it was out of character for KTP not to notice that MS was upset. They slightly changed the scene.
The female writer Jang Hyun wants to create her female lead character 'Mi Seon' as someone who can prove & stand up for herself in her company like every working woman in South Korean does. In the drama, Mi Seon rejected KTP's help because she might be looked down by taking CEO's help.It can lead to office gossip later. In this drama. the writer wants to create her characters with their individual hardship & growth. The hardships they are going to face will bring growth for everyone , our male lead KTP, female lead OMS, and every members of Typhoon Company.
(I wrote this comment because I haven't seen much of saying things like TP not helping MS on South Korean side because domestic audience realizes TP's help may not help MS at all & in the worst case, it may start behind-the-back talks.) I thought some International audience might not know the workplace gender discrimination issue is quite serious in South Korea.
kang taepoong why didn't you defend miseon from the nasty misogynistic comments??
Taepoong never heard these from GMJ because GMJ told these to MS behind TP's back. What TP saw is GMJ didn't give respect to MS. He can assume the conflict as one between older experienced trader & a younger newly hired one. He did try to take her side ,but it backfired with MJ saying MS was arrogant due to CEO's help. This was why MS asked TP not to give her special treatment anymore. I don't think GMJ gave much respect to TP either (Remember when he told the truck driver to run over TP when TP warned them not to deliver the item ) . He see KTP as his late CEO's brat. His opinion of KTP may change a bit because TP saved the company from bankruptcy and TP is a CEO now. So even if TP gives warning, GMJ won't give a fuck. You can see he is acting like a leader in this trade because he believes two younger ppl are less capable than him. I am not taking his side ,but he did help to contact the helmet manufacturer and find a trading company they need in Thailand. Both TP & MS know they need an experienced senior with connections, to run the company. This is why they don't complain much and have to live with GMJ shitty attitude.

In stories like Typhoon Family, two elements that Korean viewers would enjoy (and look for) in their viewing experience are derived from actual food and drink – sweet potato and cider.
Sweet potato’s texture when eaten it elicits that kind of frustrating feeling.
Cider, on the other hand, when you pop it open and consume the drink, it elicits that satisfying kind of cathartic feeling
So that rich dude has an inferiority complex against Kang Tae Pung, seriously? I mean ig his father must have…
Inferiority complex is a really complex thing. Not this drama but in 'You & everything else' , Sang Yeon is always jealous of Eun Jung though she has everything. She thinks her mom & her brother love her friend EJ more than her because of EJ cheerful personally which she will never have. There is a history in our country. One medical student throw acid towards her schoolmate because that one was the most beautiful girl & always got the good grades.
Jealousy always is used as a plot device in dramas. And jealousy can make people do crazy things outside of dramaworld, too.
At this point, everyone is like they would rather take PHJ story over GMJ's. Relax. The story is coming of age story in business world. Each & every character needs to grow up in a tight & ever changing era. At the end of the story. every character will have a development . Hardships & struggles of main characters make you bit stressed out, but in the end .happiness will be worth it. The writer & directors purposely chose this era to create a deep story about human developments. It won't be a happy go lucky drama like ml previous drama, ktl . These kind of stories are for those who loves stress free zone. But this story chooses not to be like that.
By episode 8, I can see the writer decides to focus on characters rather than the plot. The plot tempo itself is a bit affected by this decision.
