this drama remained me why the "fujoshi culture" is so toxic and ridiculous... so, this is awful, like most japanese…
I just checked your profile. You are a female whose list is packed with BL's. That's the definition of fujoshi. Which means that you are calling YOURSELF a toxic, ridiculous human being. On that note, yes I agree. You are ridiculous.
As always Maggi beautifully said. I too adored it and for all the reasons you stated. However, as @etoks21 pointed…
I never saw what was toxic in TharnType. With Addicted I may not agree that it's toxic, but at least I can see where others would find fault (eg, Gu Ha forces Bae Luo Yin onto a bed at one point). But there's nothing like this in TharnType. They each want the sex that they give and get. So what is it about this show that sets off so many people?
Shows like this make it seem like K-BL's have gotten bad. But it only seems that way because they now make so many, which means some bombs are inevitable. They're cranking them out at 4 a month (46 this year). That's not yet the speed of Thailand at 6 a month, but like Th-BL's there are too many pushed through too fast to make them good. But 4-5 K-BL's have been good this year, which puts them right up there with Japan and Taiwan, which also have 4-5 good ones a year. In short, it's not so much that K-BL's are bad as that there are too many.
As always Maggi beautifully said. I too adored it and for all the reasons you stated. However, as @etoks21 pointed…
I also like TharnType and KinnPorsch. In fact, those are the only 2 Thai BL's that I do like. And I love Semantic Error and Blueming. Blueming actually comes 2nd to My Beautiful Man.
As for Advance Bravely, I read some and yes, that author goes for sex scenes, but she seriously needs to have some anal sex to learn that no, it is not massively painful as she depicts. God, no man would ever have anal sex if it were as hellish as she depicts it. In Addicted, she even has Bae Luo Yin bedridden for a week with daily doctor visits after anal sex. The depiction is not as bad in Advance Bravely, but still pretty bad. I have had anal sex and yea, it was a little sore for a couple of hours, but I was fine.
As for that Bromance version of Addicted, I am with you. I don't get why everyone was gushing about it. They were saying that Stay With Me was "Addicted, but without the sexual assault." To me, it was Addicted but without the sex and kisses.
As always Maggi beautifully said. I too adored it and for all the reasons you stated. However, as @etoks21 pointed…
Bang on Andrea! This is my favorite BL. And I'm clearly not alone as it got a season one, a season two, and a movie. The Pornographer is the only other BL to have gotten a season one, a season two and a movie. Both are great BL's and have depth, character development and genuine substance.
On rewatching the scene of Hira beating the shit out of the fan I noticed that he roared like a violent beast and then, a split second later when talking to Kiyoi, his voice became as gentle as silk.
This is why I was so surprised by the next part at the 1:17:40 mark where it looked like Hira threw Kiyoi down on the floor, which is soooo out of character. Or did Kiyoi fall? What happened there?
Excruciatingly boring and cringe. Plot consists of BL tropes, one after the other.Grandma still has seagull shit…
Yea, this one is losing me. I also think it's obnoxious for them to assume that splitting it up over 6 weeks will gain word of mouth for it. In fact, it's the opposite because the 13 minute episodes are utterly forgettable such that people will end up dropping it. Look at today's episode where only 2 things happened -- the cute boys ran through the street drunkenly, and an ugly bitch posted homophobic pix of the schoolboys. That's 2 events. It ain't gonna get people talking. They should've just released it as a 90 minute movie.
To this day I still don't understand why would anyone make a 13mins/5eps drama instead of making one movie, the…
All 6 eps will amount to an hour and half, so why not just release an hour and half movie? The producers assumed that running it over the course of 6 weeks would give it time to spread word of mouth. Instead, it's annoying people so they are just dropping it. I've dropped it after today.
When an episode is 12 minutes long it's just plain obnoxious for 3 of those 12 minutes to be comprised of a pair of guys running drunkenly through an empty street. Other than this, we saw an ugly, jealous vindictive girl from the boys' high school days post photos of them online. That's it. That was the entirety of ep 3. All 6 eps of this show will amount to an hour and a half. Why not just release an hour and a half movie?
What Maggi said! Along with a few thoughts of my own under the spoiler tag below:
I absolutely noticed that Hira is more confident and the dominant one during sex. That bathtub scene was super hot. Kiyoi is beautiful, but shy, which is killer sexy. And the photographer got Hira's number when he said, "He's a wolf in sheep's clothing. There's somewhere in him that he does not want touched." Kiyoi was riveted that the photographer knew Hira so well. In season one when we got Kiyoi's point of view he said that Hira was arrogant but did not realize it. His habit of erasing people from photos was arrogant as the photographer said in season two.
When I said I wanted more of the boys that did not necessarily mean less of the side characters, as I would have liked both in a movie that was 15 min longer. But if we had to cut something to fit more of the boys home life it would be that long photoshoot of Anna in the red dress, which didn't need to be that long. Also those scenes of the psycho Eternal fans and their psycho leader. If they cut some of that stuff I would've liked to have seen a great scene from the novel where Hira's parents visit. They are concerned that this famous tv star would not be living with their shy, odd son unless he were using Hira. They always hear Hira saying he's cooking, cleaning and doing his roommates laundry so they are concerned. But when they visit they see that Kiyoi not only respects Hira, but has encouraged him to do things such as get the job with a famous photographer, which Hira never even told his parents about. Kiyoi had to tell them.
They leave thinking that Hira is lucky to have Kiyoi in his life because Hira is more confident than he's ever been before. His stutter is also nearly all gone. That scene would've added some context to Hira's and Kiyoi's relationship. Hira is still gushing about how perfect Kiyoi is (and his mom begins to sense he might be gay, lol), but we see Kiyoi also wanting his partner to stand up straight and brag about his own accomplishments.
Hira is more confident in this movie, but still has permanent traits of aspergers. For instance, he knows Kiyoi is mad when he says '"Your boss said you told him you have nothing to shoot." But Hira cannot figure out WHY Kiyoi is mad. He cannot even understand that when this happens he is supposed to ASK the person to explain. Instead, he just looks baffled and resigned to not understanding people. That inability to understand social cues will be with him for life. And Kiyoi seems good at accepting it by now. Although I am still glad that by the end Kiyoi figured out that Hira actually did want to photograph him, but simply did not have the confidence. I love how Kiyoi ordered him to take the pix, cuz he knows Hira won't disobey him, lol.
I also like that Kiyoi saw that Hira will beat the shit out of whomever hurts him, just as he did to Shirota back in high school. Kiyoi was worried that Hira had changed in this regard. Nope. Hira went superhero on that stalker fan! That whole plot with the stalker is a good example of why this novelist is a pro. Consider that the seeds for the stalker plot were laid down in season two -- eg, we knew that the fan was creepy, and we knew that Anna had a secret lover, and we knew the fan assumed she was involved with Kiyoi. All this was woven into the story early, so that it could be set into motion later in a way that was organic to the story. Also, a crazy fan is organic to the world of arts and entertainment where Hira and Kiyoi move.
I am very impressed with the novelist who wrote MBM. As I've told you before, she also wrote the novel on which the movie Wandering is based. That was about another unlikely relationship- that of a 9 year old girl who runs away from home cuz of a sexually abusive cousin, and moves in with a 19 year old man, whom everyone assumes is a pedophile. She meets him as an adult and they fall in love. The novel won awards and I thought it was an amazing story. This novelist takes real chances telling stories about unusual relationships that most people would not touch.
Lastly, weren't the intimate scenes between Hira and Kiyoi so erotic? Hira really took charge in that bathtub scene. The novelist said she got an idea one day about a boy who's introverted, shy and stutters but who, surprisingly, takes charge sexually. He's the dominant one in bed, which is to say, the seme. This concept was the novelist's whole starting point. I think it's fascinating how entire novels are born of a person just having one, small image.
as in weibo, the china version of facebook, stay with me is a hit and a china video platform sharing app, stay…
I think you are right that drama series do very well in mainland China, but Taiwan's movie industry is internationally recognized as superior. Taiwan films win awards at Cannes all the time. Ang Lee, of course, is Taiwanese and he has won Oscars. The thing is, films require a sort of honesty that the filmmakers wouldn't dare attempt in China. Indeed, the reason so many Chinese drama series are set in the past is that it's impossible to portray present day China honestly without getting in some kind of trouble.
Bl is banned in china so this drama didn't air in the country
That makes sense. I know of a businessman from Hong Kong who was arrested by the Chinese govt (now that Hong Kong is back under Chinese rule), and the Americans made a docu about him, but no Hong Kong production companies dared.
The Ongoing Saga of a Beautiful King and His Obsessive, Aspergers Servant! ____________________________________________________________________________________
You can really see how the actors have grown up in this movie. They're about 3 years older than they were in season one, and their faces are more angular as the baby fat's all melted. They also have the demeanors of young men instead of clueless teenagers this time around. It's nice to see that sort of change.
The actors have also developed in their craft and are more comfortable with intimate scenes (especially the kid playing Kiyoi, because Hira went for the kisses even in season one). The result is the sexiest of all 3 installments. And don't we all just love how Kiyoi, the beautiful "King" is actually shy during sex? He even blushes!
Kiyoi has changed the most since season one and I liked him more and more as time went on. He was a little shit for 4 eps in season one, then we got his P.O.V. in ep 5 and discovered that he was, in fact, enormously vulnerable. In season two he was shown to be so kind and patient with Hira. In the movie, he's even more patient, because, man oh man, Hira still does not get it.
Kiyoi also shows a bit of wisdom in so far as he accepts that Hira will never quite get it. It's just who Hira is. He's solipsistic and obsessive and his obsession is, of course, Kiyoi. The terrific thing about this bizarro relationship is that it not only works on those terms, but works precisely because of those terms. That is to say, Kiyoi wants to be Hira's obsession because, as he puts it, "It's as if I'm swallowed by his eyes."
Now, I would've preferred that the movie focused strictly on their relationship but I suppose that after 2 installments already, the only way to infuse dramatic conflict was to bring in some side characters for the 3rd. Thus, the plot is generated by elements external to the boys' relationship, whereas season one was 100% focused on the internal machinations of the boys' relationship.
But if I wanted more focus on the boys that's only because they are such a wonderfully original combination. A beautiful king and his obsessive Aspergers servant! Who'd have thought such a thing could ever work? And yet it does. It absolutely does.
despite everything,i'm really surprised that there's actually people who like addicted more than swm! everything…
I liked the chemistry in Addicted. The boys were a case of opposites attract. Gu Ha was impetuous, while Bae Luo Yin was steady. Gu had a violent temper, while BLY was calm. Gu Ha was emotional while BLY was rational. Gu Ha wasted money while BLY was frugal. I also liked how BLY was not only loyal to his family (as he is in both shows), but in Addicted he's also loyal to little Meng Yang (who was freaking adorable). And I liked the intensity of the passion depicted in this show . They had only spent $170,000. when most 2 minute tv ads cost more than that. Yet they had a smash success due to the chemistry of the actors and the intense vibe overall.
As for the novel, I agree that it as awful with the way Gu Ha kidnapped and raped BLY not just once, but twice. He even forced BLY's ex girlfriend to watch him rape BLY the second time. That novelist has a serious rape fetish.
Well, I'm afraid I must advise everyone that this show is sadly NOT worth watching1) Everything exciting/controversial…
You must have watched the versions on Youtube, Dramacool, and Kisskh, cuz they all edited out the kisses and sex scenes. Pull it up on Viki if you want to see the full version, but you have to subscribe to Viki. Or google "Addicted Uncut" because there is one version out there that's free, I just can't recall where I'd seen it.
But I agree that the censored, edited versions are annoying and I dropped it once I realized the kisses were all edited out in those versions.
