Like Sakuto said Haruka claimed to love the pure kindness of Old Sakuto but she herself tried stopping him when he chose to save Rio instead. For me, he made the choice himself. He would've regretted it more had he chose to save his intelligence rather than saving Rio. Hence I felt the ending was justified. Even Haruka was shown to be having new hope in the end so who knows maybe they're already working on alg without side-effects. I think the writer left it upto us to interpret the ending & for me it was a happy ending.

I always love your theory & yes, for me it's a happy ending. Because I also thought that becoming intelligent won't make you happy & how genius Sakuto forgot to smile as he got familiar with the deep dark human emotions unlike Old Sakuto who was oblivious of this cruel world. Also, Genius Sakuto knew the fact that his 2 friends will come & find him there even if go back to being his old self and I couldn't have asked for a better ending than this.

I've been putting this off for more than 4 years so finally decided to watch it after watching Yampi's acting in algernon but I find his way of pursuing her very disturbing and stalkerish. Hence dropping it :(
