Not My Taste, But Still Worth Noting

This drama is likely best suited for viewers who enjoy wholesome relationships—especially those who appreciate gentle, well-adjusted couples and the natural progression of their romance. That’s not really my preference. I tend to gravitate toward more complex, “spicier” dynamics—dysfunctional couples who struggle with their flaws but ultimately carve out some version of normalcy or a hard-earned, imperfect happiness together, like in Story of Kunning Palace and My Journey to You. Both feature strong female leads and darker, power-driven dynamics, with characters who are far from perfect yet grow within their own flawed frameworks.

That said, I did genuinely enjoy several of the subplots.

The Butcher Gang storyline was particularly engaging, and I appreciated the depth given to certain morally complex characters. They felt like both victims and unintentional perpetrators—pushed into making difficult decisions by the manipulations of those above them. The layered conspiracies and intricate palace machinations were also a highlight.

I was especially drawn to the portrayal of the Sui brothers. Their arc—shaped by trauma, torture, and a fractured perception of the world—added a compelling psychological dimension as they grappled with revenge and tried to make sense of their reality.

Overall, this wasn’t really my kind of drama, and I think I would have enjoyed it more in clips rather than watching it all the way through. There were several standout scenes that I truly enjoyed, and every performer delivered a strong—if not exceptional—performance. That said, many viewers loved it, and I’ve noticed that those who did often enjoy other dramas that don’t quite align with my tastes. So ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.
