How does this compare to dramas like Legend of Concubine Zhen Huan and Story of Yanxi Palace? If I enjoyed those, would it be likely I'd enjoy this as well? Although LoCZ somewhat dragged for me near the end irrc...
This drama was great. I'd even put it in my top 5, just for how much I enjoyed it. It isn't without its flaws, however. The ending was bittersweet. It wasn't perfect, felt quite rushed.
I need to watch this over... I dropped this because i was so devastated when one of my favourite characters died midway through the drama. But I have to admit, from what I remember, this deserves to be watched from beginning to end.
It's been two years since I've watched this, I've seen plenty of other dramas since, and nothing has topped this drama for me. And the soundtrack is just one of the best, if not the best. I'm rewatching this today.
This was the first Korean drama I'd ever watched, and probably the only romance one that ever made me feel like watching it over. Definitely a 10 from me.
I enjoyed certain things about this drama, like the OST, but I did not love the whole thing. I reached somewhere past the earthquake episode before I put it on hold. I'll probably pick it up again sometime in the future.
This was inspired by Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith (there's also a 3-part BBC drama version from 2005 if anyone is interested in checking it out; trust me, it's worth it). Having read the book, I didn't know what to expect, especially having seen the thriller and psychological genres. What I can say is... this was a masterpiece. Just everything about it, from the acting, cinematography (also wanna mention the lighting of the sets, loved it!), script, just excellent. Look, it's DEFINITELY not for the faint of heart since there are very sexually explicit scenes to watch out for, but if you don't mind that and want to really experience a great Korean adaptation (with a rare lesbian romance, at that) starring extremely talented actors and actresses, I'd say go for it :)
Is this drama kinda heavy to finish till the end? Im afraid it'd has unnecessary twist on the middle ep or dragging…
Twists? I wouldn't say so... As for dragging storylines, when I was watching it, it didn't feel dragging at all. For a drama of this length too, it ends very well. Ties all the loose ends and it was just really satisfying.
Im debating if i should watch this drama but the number of episodes hmmmmm. Is it worth it?
I know how long it is, and it took me a minute to start it too, but I can say this: It is an absolutely gorgeous drama, and one of the best costume dramas imo. It has a slow pace but you really get used to it once you're pulled into the story. Despite the amount of episodes, the story was just so good that I ended up dreading it coming to an end (you'd think 78 episodes were more than enough, but it wasn't for me!). Give the first couple of episodes a chance. I'd say it's definitely worth anyone's time, especially if you're into quality historical dramas :)
I've been thinking about this drama for a while now. I've seen some great reviews. But can someone tell me from an objective POV how good this drama is? I'm aware of the hyped up BL undertones and chemistry, but it's as if that's the only thing that I'm seeing that people are talking about. Definitely not saying that I don't like BL or that it's not great that Chinese dramas are finally getting somewhat progressive, but I'd also like to know whether or not the greatness of the drama extends beyond that. This wouldn't be the first fantasy Chinese drama I would watch, I've seen a good handful of them. I'm open to anything you guys have to say to make me watch this, because I'm hoping to spend the little free time I have these days watching something great, but no spoilers please :)
