I’m surprised to see Park Seo Joon in 2nd place. His voice is really attractive but visuals are pretty ordinary. There are many actors better looking than him. No contest for JCW, he is not only one of the most handsome actors in Korea but also in the world right now..
Overall, it was entertaining. I watched it in one sitting. Jung Il Woo was perfect as the crazy but endearing male lead. FL was less convincing but it maybe the script’s fault since her character was clueless about everything . Anyway it was a nice break from all the depressing dramas I’ve been watching lately. I just wish the romance part was less draggy, it became a little repetitive midway through the series. Would have preferred to see how their relationship progressed. Pleasantly surprised to find MonstaX. But seeing Wonho together with the other members makes me sad.
For 2018, I want to add Cha Soo Hyun from Encounter. She may not have been physically strong but she had the emotional strength to fight for what she wanted in life. I also loved the fact that the ML was just supportive, not weak or coward-like.
It’s interesting to see how everyone started their journey. Thanks for sharing!
My journey started in December 2016 (same day I joined MDL) with Boys over Flowers because I wanted to compare with an Indian drama I had watched which was based on this and Heartstrings. I fell in love with Lee Min Ho and read article that he was one of the 4 “Hallyu kings” along with Kim Soo Hyun, Lee Jong Seok, and Kim Woo Bin. So I watched each of their most famous dramas and there was no looking back after that. I kept finding more and more impressive actors/actresses and followed them through all types of genres and eventually expanded to Japanese and some Chinese dramas. Early 2017 I discovered K-Pop, particularly CNBlue whose leader Jung Yong Hwa became the first idol actor I liked. Some others I like are Lee JunHo, D.O, IU, Choi Minho and Yamapi.
I haven’t been watching k-dramas for very long so I haven’t noticed any change. I’m sort of in the middle since my favorite actors are mostly 2-3 years older or younger than me or late 20’s to mid 30’s like Lee Min Ho, Lee Jun Gi, Kim Soo Hyun, Seo In Guk, Park Hae Jin. I think my range is somewhere between 24- 37.
Are you serious? hahah I mean... I'm tired of cliché dramas (everyone gets tired of a genre and you also can…
I agree, it’s not a big deal. I was simply making an observation that k-dramas are now mimicking the west by making more dramas about law and order. I like watching them just as much as the next person but when one genre is dominating it means there are fewer choices for other genres. Afterall, only a finite number of series can air at any given moment. Sure, that might be what’s currently in demand but it doesn’t mean I have to like it.
For me, along with Touch Your Heart , Hotel Del Luna and When Camelia Blooms were my favourites. A little off topic but is anyone else getting tired of dramas about prosecutors and police? Part of the reason I started watching k-dramas was because I was tired of watching procedurals in English shows. Now the same is happening in k-dramas
Finally it’s over. I adore JCW but found his character to be very unlikeable. I still don’t understand how the leads fell in love. It was so sudden. Honestly the only thingI liked about the show was the warm sibling relationships and the way they treated the character of Nam Tae, gently and with respect.
How is it possible that a drama which has so many of my most favorite actors can be so unlikeable? JCW, Won Jin Ah, Yoon Se Ah, Kim Won Hae have all been so impressive in other dramas but not one of them is able to save this mess. I'm only up to ep. 8 but I still can't see any chemistry between the leads. Is it just me or does JCW look better with older actresses? It was like that in the K2 and now here too I like the ex more than the FL.
I think delivery matters a lot. Kim Soo Hyun does them really well making simple lines memorable. The one that comes first to mind is from Moon embracing sun where he says he loves the FL a lot.
Inspite of her tragic past I have to say that Man Wol is a lucky girl to have not one or two but three different men who care so deeply for her. I don’t know how this will end but this is the best drama I’ve seen all year.
I didn’t like the movie. FL was one of the most annoying characters I have ever seen. The only good thing about this film was being able to stare at Chanyeol for 1.5 hours.
Haven’t watched MNJ but I want to watch it after reading this article. As for CN, with due respect to the authors, I feel like we watched two very different shows. CN is one of my favorite asian dramas. One of the main reasons was because of how maturely they treated the controversial age gap story line. I could empathize with the FL and how much she struggled to fit into the adult world. She didn’t feel like a teenager. It’s interesting to see how opinions can be so different. Great article!
The insidious sexist comments by some are disappointing and sad. How many male leads are way older than the female…
Absolutely agree. The fact that a 9 year age gap between SL/ FL is more acceptable to people than the 2 year gap between between the leads just because FL is older makes no sense to me.
