I haven’t watched many chinese dramas mainly because of the huge episode count. But I loved The Untamed and am willing to give them a second chance. Great article! Maybe I just wasn’t watching the right dramas. I will start off with some of your recommendations.
I’ve only seen the last two dramas. Will have to see the others. For me Chief Kim is one such example. It’s not a genre I normally watch but I ended up loving it.
Having seen most of these dramas, the only one I would recommend is forest. It has a unique storyline and the chemistry between the leads gets better later on. The first episode is not enough to get a feel for the show. You should watch a few more before you decide.
How awful is it that I was rooting for Baek Hee Sung to not get caught by his wife? Lee Joon Gi is fantastic as always and gives me the creeps in this dark role. But I’m so used to seeing him as a positive character, that I find it hard to hate him.
I can’t do it , I feel too guilty dropping a show. I mean a group of people worked so hard to produce this content. How can I just abandon their work? And so I suffer through each and every episodes even if it is mind numbingly boring. When I absolutely can’t stand it, I will multi task doing something else at the same time but I simply can’t fast forward scenes or drop a show. I think I’ve dropped just one show so far. The only reason I did that was because I went on vacation after watching the first few episodes and then forgot about it for several months. Somehow time away made it easier to drop it.
The language thing doesn’t bother me since I do that a lot. When you’re with a group of people who speak multiple languages, it comes out naturally. Product placements done subtly, I can tolerate, but some shows go overboard. The one I hate the most isn’t mentioned here - leads having a childhood connection. It seems like last year every show had this. Thankfully this year I haven’t seen as many of them. I hope this trend goes away.
I love love love this drama and fully agree with your points. I was waiting for Kim Soo Hyun’s comeback for ages and unlike his contemporaries, his first drama doesn’t disappoint. Along with Seo Ye Ji, this show has many of my favourite supporting actors as well. I hope the show remains consistent through the rest of the series. This show definitely has the potential to become one of the best shows of the year.
I just rewatched Encounter and Kim Jin Hyuk is my definition of a perfect boyfriend. K-dramas have raised my standards to a level that is nearly impossible to meet.
An interesting take on the series. I think for any other show, the boyband effect might be valid. However, for the Untamed, not quite. This show has so many strengths, namely good storyline, great acting, pleasant soundtrack, that the presence of hot guys is greatly overshadowed. I think, the greatest asset to the show/story is WWX, who is such a likeable character that you immediately become engrossed in what the story has to offer, be it the drama, novel or anime. What makes the show even more exceptional is how well it is played by Xiao Zhan. It was like he was born to play the role. Yes, the actors are attractive but this show has much more going for it than just that. That’s not to say that it’s not worthy of fangirling - it totally is. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the two leads throughout the show, but if the story was boring, I probably wouldn’t have loved the drama as much as I do. It absolutely deserves the high rating and every praise it gets.
Excellent article. You put a lot of thought into writing this, it definitely shows. Although there were some part that I liked such as the cinematography, math, and both of WDH’s characters, it was a bit of a disappointment for me. I’d been eagerly anticipating LMH’s comeback, somehow this drama didn’t live up to the hype. The romance was the weakest point IMHO,
I’m 6 episodes away from finishing The Untamed and I can’t bring myself to watch the rest because I don’t want it to end. How am I going to survive without my daily dose of Wei Wuxian?
Gang woo won is such an annoying character. He is runing entire drama for me. i am currently on episode 5 and…
Hmm... I’m the exact opposite. Woo won and Ye Eun scenes are the only ones I like in this drama. Can’t stand the rest of the characters. Especially, Chan-mi who annoys me to no end.
Agree with the first three points totally. I don’t think I’ve seen a fast burn romance so I can’t relate. I must say I am sick and tired of the childhood connection trend, it seemed like every drama in 2019 had that. At first it was cute but now I dread it every time I see it.
I was totally in love with this drama till episode 8. It was slow, cute and warm. It had many poems and beautiful…
I agree completely! The beginning was great. My favourite parts were the book club and epilogues. I wish they’d focused more on Eun Seob’s character and his thoughts. Everyone took him for granted most of the time. The story ended up being diluted by too many side characters.
Thanks for the articles, they really help me pick out the ones I want to watch. Looking forward to: Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol Alice Flower of Evil The School Nurse Files It's Okay to Not Be Okay The Man is That Man Mystic Pop-Up Bar
