Oh I agree, ML is cute but, FL is carrying the show tbh, even from 3rd episode it felt like fillers are starting to come in. Bon does feel like made to be crowd pleaser full of tropes.

I think it’s just cultural differences. From the very first scene he was shown to be a ridiculous man and almost comedy relief / Boke, when he said “I thought the bandaid was for a pimple” showing he doesn’t care. He’s very boke and was indicated to be not much of a threat. Also some men do think like that, a wife is family, never a lover. It is a very Showa era way thinking, him and Manami’s father are shown as enablers of patriarchy. Manami’s mom is also shown to bark at her husband “昭和か？/ it’s still Showa?” after drinking, criticizing that kind of thinking. But here he is shown he couldn’t go through his own path to become another terrible man. Most cultural nuances are lost when you don’t have the correct context and cultures change at different rates too and that’s fine.
Also in episode 9, he calls himself 自己中/self-obsessed/egocentric. Sometimes shitty characters becoming self-aware is enough, anything else is just a means to an end and self-gratification. Like most fans of this drama, I also love the writing for this character, he is complex too, not a run of the mills 'fiancé' character. He is also shown to watch cartoons without earphones in public, indicating he is the most childish out of everyone, with having things handed to him all his life and benefitting from patriarchy itself and not caring about his surroundings EVER. He failed upwards in life and never had to mature because he always had things his way, until he met Manami and a man who had completely different wishes towards Manami compared to him, Taiga.
I also I think not all shitty characters need to be met with justice in fiction. Just like we live with shitty people in the real world without them facing consequences (like the orange man in the White House) dramas shouldn’t be different to that or be a place where only justice is served.

Every one is praising Raul for his acting and everyone is pleasantly surprised and considers the end of episode 6 and his acting 名シーン / really famous scene like in movies/tv (saw it in an interview). I think this is going to be considered as one of the top romance jdoramas ever. People will watch it for like years after, like Long Vacation.
