Honestly DM wouldn't have fallen for him if she knew that he is not NDS who wrote those letters.
How long can a relationship last when it's base is also based on lying.
But you can't say he is all innocent more than he character the old NDS character is loved by DM. He had chance okay but on HJP's saying he didn't say but after that he wanted to start relationship why didn't he tell the truth immediately ?

Okay so all those people who called HJP selfish? what makes him selfish? because he feels unfair that he wrote letters and now some else is taking advantage? and now he wants its credit? honestly no one likes some else taking the credit for that person did even you can't stand if were in his shoes. Maybe he took grandma's help but he wrote them and NDS just got emotionally attach and wanted to help.
Just ask your self can you let anyone take the credit of what you did without feeling that it is unfair. I bet you can't its human nature.
