I was surprised when this got suggested to me and even more surprised when I saw the trailer and realised that it was a comic I was insanely frustrated by, because I loved its concept yet it never managed to be funny or serious, and had a really bad ending! The whole time I was reading it though, I was kind of rewriting it in my head as an indie black comedy gem.
Let's hope that the film learnt from the manga's mistakes (I'll give it a rating once I've tracked it down).
Once the Chinese got wind of a big budget Disney version being in the works, everyone and his mum wrote a script. What this means is that, for audiences, it'll either be a case of there plain being too many or wanting to see them all to decide which one is best... but ultimately, each film will have difficulty getting ahead of the herd.
The 2007 version kind of sucked and this - with similar themes but a visibly smaller budget - wasn't particularly good either. I gave it a 4/10, but it could have been a 5 or 6 had the editing been tighter and the dialogue a tad more interesting.
Will I watch the other 46 Mulan films released this year to pick my favourite? Well, this didn't exactly inspire me, and considering how gorgeous the actress playing Mulan is, the entire concept of men who haven't had p***y for a year not looking twice at her, nagged in the back of my mind, killing plausability.
It's okay but nothing special and parts were kind of stupid or boring (albeit, the boredom was intentional). (C)Rap music - for me - ruins films because I plain despise it, so I'll admit to muting one scene due to the rape of my ear drums.
Overall, if you really like zombie films, you can check it out, otherwise, there's nothing really to recommend.
