I still hope they will show us how Ying Zheng became more tyrannical over time but I have also read that current scholars increasingly challenge the idea he was that tyrannical. Maybe they are trying to present a more updated view? I do think benevolent takes it a step too far though...

In my spoiler right at the bottom there is some omitted footage re: the kids and what happened there.

Rumour has it Lao Ai was gifted to Zhao Ji because he had a big *ahem*. Big enough that he could put it into wheels…
Well if you have time read Alexandre Dumas's Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. The Count of Monte Cristo is basically like NIF its an epic revenge novel - it is so good I devoured the original1000+ page unabridged version when I was 11 and re-read it several times after. The Three Musketeers have all kinds of wicked conspiracies behind the French throne. What I suggest to start is actually watching BBC's The Musketeers series - there are 3 seasons and it is really like the European version of a historical c-drama. I believe it is (or it was) on Netflix. I think you will love it.

Yes I think Zhao Gao role was well cast as well. From where this has been going I think the focus is not on the battles but everything else that needs to happen for unification to work. Like common currency, language, the canal/agriculture advancement. And it is showing us that well before the battles, the unification plans are already underway and started by both Lv Buwei and Li Si. Because winning a war is not as hard as integrating the territories won. You could argue Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan for example never conquered China they just passed through and never made any lasting cultural, institutional, military or legal impact on China where's Ying Zheng's reforms lasted thousands of years after his short dynasty fell.

She has pretty much abandoned historical dramas so I stopped watching her - I am not interested in most of the things she has been watching.

Yes indeed, but from what I read, among Ying Zheng's reforms were to remove feudal lords and to pretty much centralise the military around strategically located military strongholds. So instead of defending themselves in their own local areas, peasants just depended on the military.
I agree with your point though that they also went out of the way to show he was beloved and revered... at least at the beginning of his reign.

In all seriousness I much much more enjoy the way she "rants" than AvenueX who just goes on and on and on. She gets the same point across efficiently and humorously. Its so much more fun to watch, whether I agree or not.

Yes the dubbing is terrible... I dunno how but Zhang Huiwen got a much better voice dubber than the FL IMHO.

Ep: ~49 Lv Buwei:
I am really sad to see the old rascal go and quite touched by Ying Zheng's lingering regard for him although this sentimentality is at odds with historical accounts of this emperor. I wonder which character(s) will to step up here to keep things interesting....

Also kind of random, but I am glad they weren't explicit what happened to Lao Ai's kids.

I also found it interesting that the peasants took up arms again and defended their king because one of Ying Zheng's lasting accomplishments (?) was to de-militarize the peasants and professionalize the defense which of course left China vulnerable to conquests for centuries to come because the peasants/interior were not able to defend themselves. Once the border falls its essentially game over.

Who’s father? Zhao Fev’s? Two different guys.
Ah, ok, that makes more sense... I kept staring at him wondering if I was mistaken.

Yeah people in China were completely shocked and enraged by the thumb snatching. I mean as I was telling @Wanderer you can actually touch in Xian, I have seen people sneak a feel but as tempted as I have been, I have never dared just in case I damage them. (Although I did take pix with and fondle the ancient statues on the way into Wu Tzetian's tomb). To think a museum let a bunch of drunk people have a party there and someone actually had the audacity to do that is just outrageous.

I confess though it is precisely the slanderous part of history I find most interesting... like all the Dumas speculation whether Anne of Austria had an affair with a musketeer who fathered Louis XIV so I am glad that Sima Qian shook things up a bit. I mean the poor dude was castrated, I sure hope he had fun with something in life!!!
