Actually the way the Europeans did it was more cruel because they only use 4 horses or drawn and quartered. It takes much longer. The fifth which is the head pretty much ends things the moment the neck is snapped or the the person is strangled. Nonetheless as per @Wanderer its not a great thing to think about over x-mas! There are two parts - 40 episodes and 38 episodes but they have since been released as one 78 episode series as that is how it was shot. You don't have to watch the first 3 seasons, most (not all) people on this thread haven't watched the first 3.
