I am less familiar with Xu Bing's works - I loved his Fearless Blood but Legend of Heroes was an unspeakable atrocity and desecration of Jin Yong's most popular work. Unlike Jin Yong, Gu Long never created any iconic female characters. So I wonder if he is turning in his grave or pleased with Zhang Luyao.

As for Chen Kun - he takes so few roles these days I am just happy as a clam to see him show up cross dressing here! I don't mind if he takes darker roles. I always thought villains are a lot more interesting than heroes.

I am not at ep 6 yet but I suspected Chen Kun’s role is a villain role from the start. He is just a deputy commander of some godforsaken post far from the capital but he has a fondness of Jiangnan silk PJs and underclothes. He also owns a fake zither (meaning he can’t afford the real thing). That suggests he may be after the gold - but then maybe so is Bancha. It’s a treasure hunt to maybe that doesn’t exactly make them villains per se.

I mean, that should weigh more than 11,000 kg! Good luck trying to hide/move that!!!

Yeah I though it was just me but large chunks of the location looks fake. The only real bits look like they were high shots from drones.

This is a recurring criticism of Gu Long's works - not everyone likes that he takes his time to get to the point. I have lost my patience with him many times. Nonetheless it is characteristic of his narrative style. I won't lie - I have always preferred Jin Yong's works. That said, Gu Long has had his moments too. I am not familiar with this one and I believe it is supposed to be approached as a original work bc Zhang Luyao is a new character and the original protagonists kind of take a back seat role in this adaptation. The original isn't that highly regarded bc the ending had to be rushed for financial/editorial reasons. But I think it is a suitable works for Xu Bing to adapt bc he likes to change things around a lot. I guess if its a classic hit that can be sacrilegious but for something that wasn't that highly regarded, there is scope for improvement. Let's see if he can exceed what should not be that high a bar.

Maybe not exactly a villain. But like Luyao, I dont' trust him.

I can understand what you mean about from the middle to the end. And I also found the CP here difficult to root for. I enjoyed the plot but not so much the characters. I found the POJ plot nonsensical and boring. But I understand the CP had that wow factor that is missing here.

I think the emperor arrested ZL immediately bc he wanted to free him to roam around incognito to investigate. Bc ZL was already granted amnesty by the CP/emperor for all the charges that his Jin Yuanbao brought against him long ago. The emperor could have easily just declared this to the court.
