Title Legend of the Magnate Spoiler
Well he is engaged to someone else and this person is in the guest list. So I assume even if she isn’t the end…
I am at ep 7 and I haven't seen her yet either. I know she exists only bc the ML told the FL's father he is engaged to a Ms. Bai.

Good catch! Been having an unsettling 'what is coming up next' feeling about Li Wantang beyond what the script…
Yeah all 3 girls I usually watch dramas with abandoned it also. It was just too sad.

Title Legend of the Magnate Spoiler
Oh your so right, he was one horrible father in Royal Nirvana, I still can’t work out why he treated his son…
It was a Shakespearean tragedy. It was his son's maternal uncle's fault. He was caught between his father and his uncle's power struggle. It was tragic bc the emperor was more strict to his son bc he felt his heir was to emotional and not ruthless enough to emperor one day. As a result his son did not trust his own father but trusted his maternal uncle instead who was trying to manipulate him into rebelling against his father.

That was the most tragic drama I ever watched.

Hope the romance plot won't be developed further, it's really unnecessary and the fl it's a bit too childish for…
Well he is engaged to someone else and this person is in the guest list. So I assume even if she isn’t the end game, she will slow things down.

and the Long River also. He was amazing.
Yups that's me but its a real historical drama I like to read up on the period before watching. My Qing dynasty knowledge is spotty and I haven't had time to research it. I will get round to it at some point, I feel no rush.

Yup, the scary man😅.
I looked at him with a vague sense of familiarity and dislike. At first I thought it was because he is a villain. And then I realised who he is...

you are making me curious now... which other 2 are the ones that gave you satisfaction?
Yes indeed. I dropped JOL on my first watch but loved it later on too. I know TU is a good story I just wasn't a fan of the execution.

Let me second that. ♥️ Ranks high on my hot as hell trapped by a crazy woman recently escaped list.

Just realised Li Wantang is played by Huang Zhizhong, the emperor in Royal Nirvana who mentally abused his crown prince. Can't wait to see what he does to Li Qin here.

I am in the minority that didn't enjoy The Untamed at all I took 6 months to complete it. XZ struck me as trying too hard in that but its only in his subsequent works where his over-acting got a lot more heavy handed. And yes, traffic actors tend to over-act, he is not the first and won't be the last. I also drop most of CZY's dramas for the same reason. On some level I can suck it up but when they get an enormous amount of screen time it is too much for me I just head for the hills.

Zheng Xiaolong of course. He praised him effusively at surface but the 话里有话 or the subtext is much less positive. Its very common in China, before you criticise someone you praise them effusively first. And then slay them quietly in the final few words. I do it myself all the time when I want to indirectly tell someone off. All the preface is pure BS - as you picked up the director was "praising him too much". That is the dead giveaway. I dropped the show as I found the plot illogical and I have low tolerance for actors who over act - XZ and CZY are two prime examples. So I didn't bother to look for critics comments I just caught it on Marcus bc he featured the interviews extensively and laughed when I listened to the director's comments. I think only one other viewer caught the subtext and pointed it out in the comments.

My only issue so far is the FL. I am not familiar with the actress but I don't love her acting at all and especially…
Yes exactly. Cast a B- actor next to an A+ one makes them look like a C- actor.

Title Legend of the Magnate Spoiler
I think their rivalry in the future is inevitable. Li Qin's father is a very unethical businessman. They will…
He knows his father and his butler conspired to steal the ginseng. While he lived up to the bargain of smuggling Liu's son to the capital, he didn't care at all what happened to Su's family. He just shrugged it off and claims he he wasn't part of their conspiracy. But from some of the early scenes of the auction and how he suddenly stopped bidding, I think he knew about it and lied. In my book, he was complicit and is definitely not a good guy and I hope Su's son kills him or his dad dead when he grows up.

OMG - you nailed it! The Zhou Yiran vibe is spot on!
Hopefully this drama is all about HIM and she is just a childish decorative vase that pipes up obnoxiously once in a blue moon.

I think the comparison to Ning in EB is fair. Actually not a badly written character just somehow not well portrayed whether its the acting or the dubbing.
