I just spent the evening ignoring my family so I could binge the last 4 episodes. I have so many feelings to process but overall I’m satisfied with how everything turned out.
Not a theory per se, but earlier in the episode (IF I’m understanding correctly, which is a big if) he says he was planning on taking the scientist to a friend of his in the police, but I got a little confused about which division is which and of course I don’t know if we are meant to take him at his word. Any ideas about what’s going on there?
I think your theory is pretty spot on, but one question—towards the end of 16 when he has that phone conversation, does that open up the possibility of him being an informant? I thought it did, but I’d be the first to admit that my poor language skills might have caused me to misunderstand the scene.
spoiler for 3 above: - when female lead was shot by lei jie, it was actually sml in the script, but censorship…
Ah, that explains the shoot-out scene! I was trying to figure out if I had missed some crucial info because of my poor comprehension skills—it seemed ridiculous that you could have so much firepower—and have the area at least partially cordoned off—and yet let so many people get away.
where you watch till episode 20? Female lead is great, but ZYC still have less screen time haha
Alas, no—my “sources” amount basically to gossip on forums and now I’m feeling a bit guilty for perpetuating it:). I’d love to know one way or the other but my Mandarin isn’t good enough to actually search out that kind of info…
Nervous why? I have a similar feeling and am wondering if anyone shares my theory.
Yeah, I’m thinking it’s just enough time for a ten-year jail sentence 😬. And then, in typical cdrama fashion you’ll see them meet ambiguously for a few minutes and never know what happens …Hoping for a real HE but I worry!
On the other hand, I keep telling myself that the choice of the time period might just be because (according to what I’ve read) the drug trade in China was really big then and has since been more or less contained—so that a narrative involving so many levels of drug use and trade would be somewhat improbable.

I’m also fine with his amount of screen time. I think MDL might have given some of us the wrong impression because he was originally listed first. But she’s clearly the lead role and the rest of the cast is more of an ensemble.
I’m not bothered by this myself, in part because the story is so good, in part because this is a much meatier role for ZYC than anything else I’ve seen him in. My understanding is that because of studio issues he’s really having to claw his way into good roles, and I’m hoping his work here will earn him more respect.
at episode 20, so so so so good. love that’s an original script, the female lead is such an interesting character…
Would you happen to have a link for the director’s discussion? It sounds really interesting (and hey, I just realized you’re the one who wrote that absolutely amazing review of Imperial Coroner, yes?).
I very much agree with your description of the drama. I think the two leads are doing so well, but what really sets it apart for me is the writing and the fact that all the characters are so interesting and well done.
[after EP 11] I have a theory that the ML didn't kill the undercover cop because the gunshot was on his temple…
I’ve wondered about starting a discussion for theories about ML being a good guy—you all have had such interesting ones! But I’m worried that it’s just wishful thinking on my part 🙂.
I can't wait to praise this drama. After so long, finally I don't need to fast forward just to watch a C drama.…
Yup—I’m only on episode 2, but I’m already adjusting my expectations as to the romance and ZYC’s fate. If he really is as he’s being presented initially, this being China, there’s no way he’s going to make it out of this drama alive:). I love fluffy romances as much as anyone, but this is obviously not in that genre—and I’m okay with that as long as it’s good.
Yeah, I’m not seeing the problem either. The character has some unlikable edges (but that makes sense given her background and that’s what character development is for) but the actress strikes me as doing a fine job at this admittedly early stage.
Here’s another preview—looks interesting. Also, I know this is a superficial take, but I really like that ML is not looking super bleached: https://youtu.be/CiEXCVj7lnY
