You must be watching episode 1 from fastdrama/the subs done by Pikachuu. He/She made a mistake in the subbing. It is a Republican Era film and Ming in chinese is actually the word for civilians so what they meant was civilians not civilians from the Ming dynasty. I think you can. I'm watching it without watching the 1st season. The drama explains what happens at the end of the 1st season and who is who but it helps a lot if you watched the 1st season first.
