It's on Youtube, but unfortunately there are no subs. I noticed that it stars Vladimír Mensík, the most popular…
oh my gosh, I though your description for the show Arabela seemed familiar and I looked it up. It is the show I have been looking for since forever. I remember watching it when I was younger but had no idea it was a Czech tv show because they dubbed over the actors in my country. I knew it was a western show because of the actors and I lived in Asia. I still remember so much of it like the magic ring.
It was definitely one of the best shows I watched as a child that I still remember it to this day. Thank you so much for giving me its English name since I only knew it’s name in my native language.
I’m not sure if it’s also Czech but there was another show that aired around the same time in my home country about a boy who is lazy and not great at school. He decides to make (?) a robot that looks exactly like him and have him do all the chores and go to school in his place. I think the name is something like “robot boy” roughly translated from my native language.
1000% agree with you, like I mentioned in the article there is a plethora of female personalities in the world…
Well, i mean...the title of your article is "not your average female lead" and my point was that the female leads I mentioned above ARE typical female leads. I only talked about the "badass" hype aspect because these kinds of leads are becoming popular now. if innocent leads were trending, I would make the same argument.
I mean the biggest hits of recent years, Crash Landing on You, Hotel Del Luna, Its Okay to Not Be Okay all have the same overall archetype of a cynical woman with a bad past who is neither good nor bad and dressed in fashionable clothes. they are the standard, the trend. it seems weird to say that they're not your average female lead to me. that's all.
of course, everyone's definition of refreshing is different and this is just my point of view.
I liked your articles! LOL. I would add Han Groo's character from Marriage, Not Dating here because she is willing…
yesss. I loved Han Groo's role and just about everything about Marriage, Not Dating. its defintely one of those dramas I wish I could forget ever seeing so I can watch it again and get that incredible feeling of finding a hidden gem.
I agree with all the female leads except the ones from Its Okay Not to Be Okay and Hotel Del Luna. unlike the female lead from My Love from the Stars, they just seem so tryhard? like MLFTS came out during a time when most dramas had the typical innocent female lead who kind of took backseat to the male lead. She was refreshing to watch during the airing of the drama.
But now it just seems like everyone is trying to be a "badass" and they're slowly becoming the typical kdrama female lead they are supposed to go against. there should be more variety, not just people following the trend. the thing is there were plenty of powerful and brave women in dramaland before this trend of unnecessarily loud, rude to every one female leads. they were just less in our faces.
as a kpop fan, this is exactly like when everyone started doing the girl crush concept that it got so tiring, i mean there's still people doing it and fans hyping up overrated stuff while giving cute concepts unnecessary hate. its like why cant the two coexist? why cant a no-nonsense school teacher fall in love with the male lead and act like a helpless school girl? thats real life. we're sometimes weak and sometimes endlessly courageous.
its just polarizing to say a female lead is either this or that, no in between. female leads in general get more scrutinization while a male lead can be hot and have no backstory whatsoever so im not really hating on either of the female leads from IOTNBO or HDL as i know they can be vulnerable at times.
this is more targeted towards people who are shoving them in everyone's face as the perfect example of a female lead while trashing female leads who act foolish in front of the male lead. like do yall never get nervous or trust people easily? are you a total badass 24/7?
i guess my point is women and people, in general, are multidimensional characters who should not be put in a category based on whatever is trendy this year.
I don't think op meant anything by it. it's just that kdrama writers are so obsessed with making the untypical version of the female lead that they purposely make the female lead loud, rude, and just overall annoying. at least to me. being rude and disrespectful looks bad whether you are feminine or masculine. these female leads are kinda like hipsters now. they try so hard to be different but are you really different when everyone else is exactly the same? they just remind me of the people who think they're so quirky "im, not like other girls." it's nice to have some variety. and you rstatement about female leads being stupid, naive, and docile just rubs me the wrong way. seems like people who condemn so-called "weak" female leads automatically associate the word feminine as weak and praise leads who are really annoying and loud because they're apparently being masculine or whatever. they get defensive when people use the word feminine like are y'all ashamed of being a woman or what? a woman can be feminine and still be badass in their own way.
theres something about the obssessive sml that is intriguing and his storyline was wayyy more interesting than the main leads' love story imo. i wanted to drop this drama halfway in but he kept me going.
this drama was really popular at the time of its airing so they did two alternative endings to the drama, one where the female lead ends up with the male lead while other had her ending up with the second male lead.
the extended version (68 ep) is the one where she ends ups with the second male lead while the 24 ep thats on netflix has her with the male lead.
i recommend you watch at least a few eps of the extended version cause the director's cut version that's on Netflix is very messy and abruptly jumps from place to place. makes no sense and she chooses the jerk male lead in that one.
Interesting. I cannot stand Yang Mi's stuff. I only watched Eternal Love because of the Dramafever snippets showing…
this is late but i thought i was the only one who couldnt stand yang mi and li ying for some reason. i gave eternal love a try but dropped it after a few eps.
tho as someone who considers reverse harem both her bread and butter, im not particularly fond of both of them…
i mean i consider HYD the OG ver too since the source material is originally from Japan but i just put OG for the taiwanese version cause most people tend to get it confused with the old chinese version (which came later) since they both speak chinese and some of the actors also sometimes star in mainland chinese dramas. theres also the new meteor garden which is from mainland but people think its from taiwan and its all really confusing to keep up with the many HYD remakes.
you were right on point. Cinderella and the four knights is my ultimate guilty pleasure watch like how do you resist ahn jae hyun as the ultimate rich playboy? filled with hilarious cheesy scenes, its been helping me greatly with enduring being locked in the house. tho it was really weird seeing park do sam as the conman sister in Parasite after watching her play as the spunky and lovable cinderella here. definitely recommended for anyone looking for a light hearted romcom to get through being stuck at home.
