Perfect, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I'm also worried about how they will interpret the novel because well: - chinese dramas never follow the novel completely and alter it in their own way (and they have a right to) but it really takes away some memorable moments or characters in the drama. - fitting this story into 40 episodes will be hard. I'm hoping they do it in 2 seasons (though I haven't seen anything to indicate they will and there are rules about seasons being aired a year apart).
I guess we will see when it airs, I'm sure it'll still be amazing either way and hope it stays true to the important events of the novel.

Oh I see, definitely makes more sense for them to be supporting roles because the story really doesn't have 2nd main leads (spoiler below but I won't name any names besides the leads).
The novel does have many male characters but I think it's half a harem. For Ye Li, she has one guy who regrets letting her go and is always going on about it (I mean same I would regret letting Ye Li go too), another who has a crush on her but I mean she's already married sooo. Otherwise, the other males around her are either family or the ones she encounters through each arc.
For Xuiyao, he does have a few people chasing him but he could care less about them and is extremely loyal and only has eyes for Ye Li (soo excited to see Cheng Lei portray him). Though in general there are many many characters in the novel that I forget who is who sometimes.
I am really hoping we see some modern era scenes especially because she was a soldier in her past life and because it's Bai Lu! I've been dying to see her in something similar to Arsenal Military Academy since I watched it (also praying she has another republican drama in the coming years).
Highly recommend the novel for when you have time!!
For anyone who has read the novel (I have only read 266/434 chapters), can I just say that Noble Consort Liu is seriously one of the most shameless characters I have ever seen in any novel/story.
I'm actually baffled by how persistent and shameless she is despite getting several warnings! On that note I am excited to see which actress will be playing her and how well she portrays the character.
I keep seeing on melon accts about so-and-so as 2nd ML and 2nd FL. But I honestly cant think of which characters…
I agree with you! I haven't finished the full novel yet but I am just over halfway.
When I first heard the Niu Jun Feng melon I thought it was 2nd ML as in Mo Jingli but then I saw on twitter that it was for Xu Qingchen instead and got really confused. I don't really consider Xu Qingchen as the 2nd ML? He definitely does come up more in the story later but still I don't think he is the 2nd ML.
The only reason I mentioned Mo Jingli and also Ye Ying as the second leads is because the story starts off like that but they don't come up that much as it progresses. Plus with the latest melons for casting of the second leads, it does seem to be them even though it is not explicitly mentioned.
i have just started this one and... wow .. it is such a well made slice of life drama.i love being taken on a…
It really is, I'm sure you'll end up loving all of it. When I started it I knew nothing about the Grand Canel but was sooo curious to learn more about it as time went by (I even hope to visit one day).
Would highly recommend the companion piece by Frost in the discussions tab.
I have now completed my long Companion piece. It has everything about the drama: dates, music, crew, characters,…
The amount of time and dedication you put into these two discussions, thank you!! I love that I now have an in-depth piece to read and refer to when it comes to Northward and Bai Lu :)
gosh! that speech XWH made is incredibly romantic! I’m like crying hearing that! no wonder BL gave the most…
I completely agree! For someone who says he doesn't know how to say romantic words, that was an incredibly romantic moment and probably one of my favs of all time.
Why was this drama sooooo good though, I cried like crazy in the last 8 episodes 😭😭
Honestly a very solid 10/10 for me, I really have to thank the whole cast and crew for such an amazing drama and top notch acting, it wouldn't have been possible without all of them!!
The realism in this drama hits way too deep and I love how relatable it was, got huge 2ML syndrome but Wanghe really pulled through at the end (especially loved that last bridge scene and the scene directly after).
I told myself I wouldn't watch all the episodes and save it little by little for later in the week but now I feel empty knowing there won't be any new episodes in the next few weeks.
I've watched many slice of life Korean dramas but not many Chinese ones, I'll definitely be checking out more Chinese ones from now on. Can now see why they are so popular nationally.

So glad she is getting some rest before joining!
They did such an amazing job with the romance here, it felt not too much and not too little but perfectly executed!
Would be so happy if they did 2 dramas together (since Mo Li is also heavily rumoured as them).
