Hi I'm back! I actually wanted to continue this convo but remembered you only by your old profile picture so when that changed I couldn't find this discussion anymore. So yeah sorry about taking a year to respond! It has been on my mind though. Today I randomly found this list again from some 2009 BL movie and so I'm back! I think the comment I made was before even the Pinoy BL boom happened or Korean BLs became a normal thing (2020 was a wild year) so its been a while.
In regards to pondering about the deeper aspects about BL. I've been lucky enough to have found some nice communities and individual BL fans online who do tend to think about such stuff. Mostly on Discord BL servers since communication on MDL is slower.
Thank you for sharing your origin story! I'm still a fledgling in comparison to other BL fans but talking to longterm fans has helped a lot in understanding a lot of stuff. When I made that comment I was super new to BL (started like a few months back) and I'm glad you responded in such detail. I've never really explored Western LGBT content in detail myself but have been taught about some of it by other BL fans.
I agree with your point on web novels since a great example of that is Tharntype. Web novels are indeed easily accessible to make for younger writers and thus sometimes more prone to contain problematic behaviour.
Your example of the change in attitudes towards whats considered normal in intimate relations was indeed concerning to read. I think a part of that is just exposure to extreme stuff from a younger age. Since the internet has made everything much more available the extreme becomes more commonly available to see. So it is innevitable and its often only when BL fans get older that they learn about why its problematic thanks to feedback from others in communities. Of course there will always be the toxic bubble communities that avoid this learning process completely.
You are right about Thailand in my opinion. Theres both very progressive and very conservative elements that are often seen in BLs too. Outside of the Thai BL realm Thai dramas/lakorns follow the same pattern with both progressive and conservative storylines. The Thai BL industry has recently started becoming much more diverse in its storylines in 2021 and I love it for that.
I mentioned Tharntype quite often and that was likely the initial reason I commented since I had that storyline in mind. However, with recent Thai BL there hasn't really been as much that can be compared to Tharntype as I thought there would be after its success. Again I don't hate Tharntype (my first Thai BL after all) but I was concerned about its effects on Thai BL stories as a whole. Now it seems that my concerns were largely unnecessary. As you said many novels may still carry these themes but luckily they are cut or edited for dramas.
Your comparison of Thailand to other countries is interesting to me. In my view Taiwan produces both interesting LGBT projects but also some of the most stereotypical ''yaoi''-like stories for BL sometimes. China... Well, the only option is swordfighting dudes who flirt through poem references and (are willing to) die for each other. I like poems though but yeah it's not the ideal situation although it has resulted in the birth of many more bromance fans and a ton of discussion around what can be considered BL. I just call them censored BL since everyone can at least agree on that.
I agree that at least one of the best places currently is Thailand and I agree we should be positive about it. It does allow for much more diversity in the storytelling of personal experiences. While in Korea and Japan (China has stopped all BL so won't include it here) you can see subtle signs of it not being acceptable even in BL. Like the parents not being involved or indeed the fear of showing public affection or the lack of openness in the workplace. Both Japan and Korea are still gonna be those countries that may accept depictions of BL but are against LGBT generally. The change is very very slow.
And ye I agree that diversity in storytelling is the most important thing. And yeah I have seen some of the older BLs that do that negative stuff and it wasn't great. I'll miss this drama, it always delivered a fun few minutes and made me look forward to the next episode. It worked great since I usually have to go through hourlong episodes and this drama was the perfect break from that.
The ending was something I have peace with. I actually really loved the character of Jacky she was cool. So many different topics were addressed, some of it recognisable but some of it surprised me when the genderroles were reversed since society normalizes a lot. It's a free drama and an interesting watch, would recommend.
Well it certainly isn't a wholesome drama in any way. The mature and infidelity tags definitely apply. Episode 1 just has a very hopeless vibe to it. Watched it raw. I'm curious about what exactly happened in that first scene though and what the results of it will be.

I don't claim to know the answer of what happened but I did want to point out the case isn't resolved yet and there are still people out there who are ''alleged'' victims. I thought I made that pretty clear. Again just said the case is still ongoing as long as the other ''alleged'' victims are out there and that we have valid reason (Kim Ji Soo his own apology) to believe at least some claims will be true. Just a reminder that just because one accusation regarding assault was proven false doesn't take away any of the other bullying accusations. Multiple people came forward regarding the bullying incidents. Of course lying is wrong and I'm glad in this particular case the truth was uncovered as this specific accusation was very serious but it doesn't just magically take away all the other people who accused him of severe bullying.
I'm glad to hear Kim Ji Soo never assaulted anyone but I also know this guy was pretty horrible during his highschool years from the descriptions the other victims gave. Those stories still haven't been disproven and I doubt they will be as Kim Ji Soo has apologised for them.

A lot of this is interpretation of my own, just warning. Using my previous experience with watching chaotic cdramas that barely explain their plotline.
1. The dragon war As for the whole war. Well just accept that Dragons are evil with their poison smoke and let it be. Apparently they have something against mermaids but it's never really explored. Dragons likely have a very slow plan of taking over the world which includes slowely killing off the other fantasy creatures until they can easily overthrow the humans but things didn't work out.
2. The love story explained I know the love story does seem rushed but I'll try to make it seem a little more logical. You remember how the merman said he had the power to hypnotise for a little while? Yeah guess what he did when they first met. Those random flashes of bedscenes were the main lead getting that hypno mermaid experience.
So after being practically led to have bed fantasies over mermaid guy the love story does progress pretty quickly. Male lead won't kill him and with those fantasies implanted its easy for merman to become his favorite. Yes its not a very romantic idea but the merman is seducing his way into safety which is his survival strategy I guess. I do think merman loved him back as he is prepared to sacrifice everything for him.
3. The ending So the ending is the most confusing part. Male lead is seen acting on a historical cdrama scene and it seems the entire story wasn't real? Now some can already guess that the mermaid likely made him immortal back when the story happened and now main lead is cursed to roam the earth in search for his lover. As merman told him ''you can't leave me behind'', now he has to wait for merman to return.
So what happened here exactly? Merman gave male lead his power/life force yes but not his soul. So male lead became an immortal cursed to wait for his lover to reincarnate/return. With the curse being lifted symbolically shown as the green silk is blown away.
As for why he wondered onto that filmset exactly... Likely just nostalgia, he has lived so long the memories of his early life keep haunting him. He was just an extra and the filmcrew just seems to be happy not to have to pay him.
