Ok, this is not a romcom. I was confused at first because the dramas of Park Minyoung did before were romcoms.
Park min young’s dramas are very light or very dark. She only chooses extreme. So remember war of son, weather is fine and queen of 7 days are tragedies and they are are last six dramas. She seems to alternate light and dark. Her tragedies only seem to be popular in Korea which is why global audience only associate her with romcoms and it’s far from truth

I wish Thai dramas got more love. After watching Korean dramas which are full of very toxic workplaces and mean people, it can get a bit tiring. Thai dramas are like a breath of fresh air. Yes you have to suspend your disbelief, but they are usually very happy dramas. I think provenance should not matter when it comes to watching Asian dramas. I also feel the same way about Japanese dramas and think they need more love. Also I don’t agree (my humble opinion) with Thai drama ratings on MDL. Most of them have average ratings which is a disservice since some shows are real fun.

Think a bit of Sky Castle and Reflection of You. I wouldn't say that its very good.
Thank you. This means a lot of toxicity and mean women. Then I will give this a pass. Thank you 😊

How is this drama? I usually love dark and gritty romances. However when it comes to motherhood or children based dramas I don’t like too much toxicity or negativity. Sky Castle and it’s mean mothers really was disturbing for me (my humble opinion) although I loved the drama. Is this really full of women who are cruel like that ? For slice of life I usually like dramas like dear my life or Navillera. Can someone tell me?

Kim So Yeon would make a great mythical creature. She's got an other-worldly look to her at least in my opinion.…
Me too I don’t like Jo Bo Ah (my personal opinion, she is a bit I don’t know what I mean Is I never would be compelled to watch a show because of her in it) at all. But Kim So Yeon is amazing. Just for this I may watch it. But I hope it’s not too much angst and more thrill and fantasy.

Ryan Gold was definitely a better lead as he was not self-obsessed and narcissistic. The male lead is quite narcissistic…
Yes everyone is looking at the actor. I am fine with that what I have a problem with is the writer for glorifying a character which is clearly a jerk. I don’t like chaebol jerks to be sympathised by authors. People who infringe upon other peoples rights just because they are employees. It’s not a critique on park Seo joon the actor at all. Most dramas are what is ultimately the authors vision. Actors are conduits of that idea.

Definitely not "currently airing" lol, but I'm none of them. I don't know what category you'd put me in for someone…
I also don’t belong to this list I think. I love stories since I am more of a book reader so just like a tale well told. And things which show life as it is, which k dramas do very well in my opinion. Don’t like fluffy romance but like gritty and grim romance, so I really liked nevertheless and the secret (Ji sung). I keep wishing someday we will get a good withering heights remake with all of the complexities of heathcliff.

I really want to keep my trio of ladies on screen - Ha Ji won, Park Min young and yes please don’t hate me Song Hye Kyo. I think other than Now We Breaking Up and Secretary Kim, I have enjoyed all of their works. Ha Ji Won I loved her in everything but for tomorrow. I cannot forget how spellbound I was when I watched empress ki in 2015. I am south Asian and everyone in my family tuned in to watch that show. Everyone including the grandparents. That was the power of her acting. It’s been so many years now. I want to see her again.

She needs a good break. She used to be the Queen of Kdramas but for the past few years, her dramas haven't done…
I really liked her and she is the only one other than park Min young (but for secretary Kim) that I liked all their projects. She went through a very tragic personal life event which is why we have not seen her in my humble opinion. This is why I think her comeback project Chocolate was such a sad drama too. I hope she has healed and recovered and that we have her back.

That’s exactly what I was trying to say 😊😊. Sometimes what global audience liked is not liked by local audience and vice versa. So it’s like the production house picks up it’s target audience, it’s almost like marketing a consumer product. The creators when they get a script I think they know which is the consumer here. And some dramas are liked by all for example hometown Cha Cha.

I am seeing a trend here. Forecasting weather was also loved by Koreans but not so for international audiences.…
I still really really liked flaw. Save for ep 13 and 14. The story was very healing and very meaningful for me. Only thing I hated was the glorification of the cheaters.

I agree with you, that many global audience will not find it relatable, I think what we are talking about is that this drama is popular in Korea with very high ratings (higher than 2521 even) and the story appears to have domestic audiences as it’s key target segment. So it may strike a chord of dissonance with audience elsewhere. It’s happens sometimes like this right some stories are global in their appeal and some are very local in their appeal. Many Indian, Nigerian and Indonesian movies are like that with the content very localised and specific. I personally loved a Nigerian movie called NNekka and Indonesia Islamic story Verses of love. But both did not gain much popularity on Netflix. I think FLAW was the same. Locals really liked it and it’s brutally honest portrayal of the toxic work culture in Korea.

Netflix is in financial distress and their share prices have lost a lot of market value. I am suspecting that their future content will be more driven by their key markets North America and Latin America . I saw so many telenovela type shows these few months. Plus more business proposal type entertaining and fluffy stories without much depth.

Many are not accepting slice of life stories nowadays many are into rom coms, think the drama will be a success…
I am seeing a trend here. Forecasting weather was also loved by Koreans but not so for international audiences. With Netflix not doing well, I think it’s something production houses were already aware of probably? Which is why maybe the cable networks are focusing back on local audiences. So I am seeing very polar ratings- programs loved by local audiences but not so much internationally. I don’t think that’s a bad thing though since it’s allows for more diversity beyond the usual college/high school stories or romances with ceos :)

By weather forecast you mean forecasting love and weather? Is that drama actually worth watching? I'm curious…
I am person who can enjoy a drama in bits and parts. And with forecasting what I skipped I hated and what I watched I loved. I found the leads chemistry very good. I just pretended episodes 12 to 14 did not exist and so did the cheaters. And watched episode 15 on fast forward. Ep 12 to 15 felt like someone else wrote this show. And don’t know why I ended up liking this drama on rewatch even though I had initially hated it.

This drama is going to be on my watch list. I seem to like dramas which MDL rates 7.5 to 8 since those are dramas which show flawed older (sometimes younger) characters who are going through existential crisis - Nevertheless, Weather Forecasting, Marriage Contract. So I will tune in once this finishes airing. Conversely all dramas rated 8.5 and above, save for Hometown Cha Cha, It’s Ok Not to be Ok, Navillera and Business Proposal, I dropped in the first couple of episodes. And yes all dramas below 7 are usually bad from a product and technical perspective - Bad acting, bad direction and incoherent storylines. So my thinking (it’s my humble opinion), if you are called to watch a drama rated 7 and above, give it a shot, because we are diverse people with diverse tastes. Who knows you may love a drama which many others find average 🙂👍
On Her Private Life Apr 21, 2022
So I am a huge fan of park min young. But the dramas I like are not the usual ones. If I want the happy feels I watch this drama. In 2019, the world before covid, reminds me of this drama. Every time I want to think of a happier time of a world before covid, I just come back to Her Private Life. I hate secretary king due to the absolute jerk hero. And every time I want to think of the world moving back towards a new normal, I think of weather forecasting. When I was watching weather forecasting, this was the first time I stepped out of my country of stay after more than 2 years. Weather forecasting was almost like poetic justice since that drama showed life which was far from perfect and is very true of this post covid world. Hopeful but still far from what it used to be. And when I want to see a drama about a time where women are fighting to be educated, I watch sungkungkwan. So these three trio of dramas are the ultimate fix for me 🙂
