Started watching the new drama "Where Dreams Begin" with Xiao Chan and Li Qin - it's one of those nostalgic look back at 1970s Communist era.........most likely full of propoganda, but I like Li Qin, so may watch to see how it goes. (first impression - think everyone looks too well nourished for the 70s when they hadn't opened up to the rest of the world yet).

The dark aura was either cultivated by or possessed the little brother of Xuelin the wife of Chengyi. He captured BXS and used his shadow power to create a protective cloak for himself so he wouldn't suffer again at the hands of TY, the only one who can whack him. Chengyi, Xuelin and Qingguang (the grandmaster of YH's sect) fought the Dark Lord and QG restrained him within himself. That's why he's sitting inside a formation on top of the mountain with Lingxiao's help.
Chenglan and Chengyi are identical twins. When there are identical twins born in the ruling family of the fox clan, the younger is taken away and killed to avoid future conflict over the throne. Chengyi the younger was spared by Zhao Yu.
When Chengyi found out about Chenglan's existence, he let him go. Chenglan went to live in the Dragon Valley where he was friends with TY. Apparently he tried to dissuade TY from falling in love with SY, but failed. Following that he may have become disillusioned/disappointed and went over to the dark side willingly or became vulnerable to the Dark Lord's persuasion.
20 years ago TY fell in love and was dismembered by SY (leading to Chenglan's disillusionment).
Fifteen years ago, Chenglan had already become part of the Dark Lord's camp and helped him open up a portal to absorb people's energy.

Yes, they're getting back together and quite nicely - just in time to face more trials and tribulations - but at least they're together. TY is still a hopeless communicator (hasn't told her the full implication of the 9 stars yet). Was disappointed BXS wasn't sold off to Qijue Agency 😂😂 Seems like he's hopelessly cast as the SML with unrequited feelings - big sigh. Too bad, his character was quite refreshing initially.
