Really? It looks great on him. Actually anything looks great. But can somebody explain to me why people underestimated…
Luckily everyone underestimated it. I think it being so underrated and there being almost zero expectations and no promotion surrounding it was why WOH took us all by storm. There were no expectations to disappoint and things could only go up, and when ZZH/GJ gave us those stellar performances the drama just rocketed into the stratosphere. I still remember my initial reax to those first 2 episodes - I really had to go sit down (I had been watching ep 1 while cleaning my living room), rewind and rewatch just to make sure I was watching those same actors I had seen previously, and either didn't know their name (GJ) or written off as the perpetually cold, stick-up-ass, hair-in-victorian-bun prince (ZZH)...........Also it being under-promoted probably saved it from being chopped up by the censors.
It is BL inasmuch as can be shown in a period c-drama produced in mainland China. There is no doubt about the BL, in case the audience doesn't get it there are not 1 but 2 scenes with cut sleeves, shots of shaobings, and even wedding rituals thrown in. There are not so hidden lines underneath the overdubbing which have been decoded by netizenry on YT - some of which would probably not even have been allowed in BG period drama, and there are intimate scenes (again bearing in mind the caveat in my opening line) which really don't leave that much room for doubt..........just watch it for youself and judge.
WOH has allowed GJ and ZZH to portray a wide range of emotions and expressions, I think it is also thanks to the…
If you had watched them previously you would have been gobsmacked at the difference in WOH. I know I was, and now a fan girl. It took a very special conjunction of the heavens to bring about WOH as we now have it, and could not have come about without a genius scriptwriter, Xiao Chu, the production team and COVID-19.
I love shows that introduce and bring me closer to that country's culture, histories, current news and politics,…
Avenue X has done a few including talking about the hidden lines - look up her videos on WOH. Also check out Chinese Star News YT videos - he goes into some detail about idioms and poems as well. There is also mention of the gay cultural references such as the shaobings in EP 2 and the historical meaning of cut sleeves.
I don’t think viki has the latest updated version(s). The updated versions are Youku’s continuing response to fans’ reception/feedback and probably also cos the series is now “safe” from being chopped by censors. For eg they are adding shots which show more intimacy to the delight of fans. You can check by comparing ep 20 on viki and yt. You will notice there is a small but very significant extended shot of ZZS and WKX in the Yt version in the cave scene. Youku also released a special version of ep 6 with an extra scene recently that was not seen by any audiences in or outside China previously. It was an Easter egg reward/commemoration for reaching 2 million subscribers on Youku yt. Viki probably can’t show the new version(s) because with WOH, post production never ends. They are still re-editing episodes and there was discussion just a few days ago about how they have removed another scene in response to fans’ criticism. They had also previously re-edited ep 14 after it aired in China and redubbed some scenes as well. I believe they may even give us a complete ending in ep 36 without the need for the bonus clip or ep 37. It is quite unprecedented. The series is basically evolving as I type this.
Both GJ and ZZH's new upcoming dramas are by Youku (Flaming Heart and Retro Detective). Youku really hit it big…
Ummm hmmm, looks like they have some lucky stars in their corner this year. Hope they will now look into building an international platform for their dramas.
For me it does rank as one of the top wuxia dramas in recent years. I read on twitter someone's list of wuxia…
IKR, I think ZZH is really cool IRL - from the bits and pieces that have subs on youtube I gather his injury a few years ago must have been very serious cos he apparently can't play basketball any more and had to switch to golf. But he just talks about it as a life experience and then moves on - very resilient.
