The writers did Yan Ze dirty! In the novel, he literally set himself and the impostor on fire, delivering the whole place on a platter along with a nicely written decree for YC. The new royal duo were an absolute tempest together in the court, I feel like we’ve been robbed. Loads of other characters were similarly done a disservice.
Comfort drama, pretty good script and acting. The plot wasn’t super exciting, but I did appreciate the TCM knowledge. I actually use TCM to treat some health issues myself.
ohhh, could you share more on the novel. the differences between drama and book? Interested.
Don’t get me wrong, I really like the drama as well, but in the novel, Manman and Wei Shao’s relationship was depicted in so many different hues, it was certainly a journey.
Initially it gives off that vibe, but imo Moonlight Mystique had a better plot line (even if they changed the novel almost beyond recognition). I’d say this is more like TTEOM.

Well, first her family betray the Wei family for no reason but that they’re opportunists, nothing so honourable as protecting the people. The grandpa dies quite before the wedding, there is no such thing as Manman needing to abstain for a year or wait for them to consume the marriage. Wei Shao doesn’t touch because she’s from the family of his enemies, but he does spend the night in her room.
In the story, there was very little to do with creating canals for the people. Wei Shao wanted to become emperor, and that’s what he thought for, though he did want to bring stability to the country.
Also his cousin is actually half-Xiongnu (an enemy of all Han people), not heir to Beizhou. The cousin still falls in love with Manman, and does some dirty things while watching her portrait. However, ultimately it’s his heritage that completely destroys the cousins’ relationship, in addition to his obsession with Manman. In the novel, Wei Shao fights his cousin, beating him to a pulp for even daring to think about his wife.
Wei Shao & Manman have a tense relationship initially, but when his mother gives him the aphrodisiac, Manman actually does help alleviate it all night long, though not through actual intercourse. Since then you could say he’s tasted heaven, and in time they actually become intimate, very often, and thus become closer. However, she starts trusting him quite later than in the drama. He is very hurt by that, though that gets resolved as well.
Wei Shao’s mum went as far as trying to kill Manman, and almost killed Wei Shao’s grandma, Madam Xu, instead (through Yu Long Lady’s machinations) , basically destroying Wei Shao’s relationship with his mother.
Yu Long lady does loads of things similar to the drama, but Wei Shao is really cold to her from the get go. She is not his brother’s beloved.
Wei Shao and Manman do have a daughter, and he loves his wife and daughter very much. Once he becomes emperor, she - the Empress is the only one in the harem.
I can tolerate the ending at best. Such a pity!
P.S. The didn’t include our CP’s babies either 😭
I really like the main leads, but I couldn’t continue… if there is a season 2, I might give it another try
For me the ML is a model God of War, in looks, mien, speech, and behaviour. He is truly a dedicated and steadfast God.
The FL was everything kind and warm, it would be impossible not to fall in love with her. She’s the Snow White of the Nine Heavens.
