to be fair, you could see he had some doubts about his relationship with his ex and the reasons he liked her were because she was pretty and cool basically, also... it was obviously said his feelings towards the friend werent purely platonic and he came to realize that, not to mention the time jump made sense in a way, that they took it slow and he didnt fully confessed and kissed her right away, so it wasnt rushed or unnatural
