The manhwa itself also difficult to understand, and worse because its dragged up. Like In the drama Iljo left promptly after rejected and insulted by JH, But in manhwa he linger a bit before suddenly vanished.
IMO you shouldnt understand any of these charachters because they both are toxic on each way and we are here to shake our head watching drama brew and enjoying the steam coming out of it.
The simple answer, this drama stemmed from Ilho and Jeonghan's lust for each other. And the 2nd half tells the repercussions of their commitment to each other. No kidding, they'd make future family gathering akward.

Reading comment on reddit, making iljo and jh close since childhood helps to rationalize iljo feelings and JH obsession. I guess different interpretation to different person.

In the manhwa they arent really a good friend and JH feels Iljo isnt up to his class to befriend with. I am surprised they change it in drama.

Altho its feel rush, for me kinda maje sense bcs days ago JH treted Iljo like shit. Him running and looking for Ilho bcs he realize how empty it was without him but still not sure if Iljo worth ruining familial ties for.
Thats why in the preview we see Iljo still hesitant with JH's sudden request to date (+he just got threatend by step bro)

Yeah, only 8 eps so no choice but to go fast. But the next arc is another angst for JeongHan as per OG source Iljho gonna pull away from JH... again for different reason. In that sense I think its make nice balance compared to the manhwa where same motive (Iljo dissapear fr JH life) repeated for similar duration. Making reader feels tired reading same thing happens again

Even in the manhwa ML progression from red to green is kinda like that. Only Ignited by Iljo pulling away and dissapear to his late home dad. But since its told in long and convoluted way, I kinda meh... finally, whatever. Jeonghan still doesnt deserve iljo.
However since drama pacing so fast i feel the other way like.. Dude, slow down or people gonna think this doesnt make sense.

In my opinion, reading for that convoluted manhwa, Iljo realize Jeonghan would lose a lot of things if they openly date (JH too eager to do that) and chickened out from relationship (step bro and JH's father play a role too) For me its a well deserved arc for Jeonghan. he'll feel the torture that arc.
